What was new to you this year that you will sow again next year?

As I was walking around the garden this morning, I realized that I was so glad I had tried the following seeds and will add them to my "every year" list:

Aster crego

Impatiens Balfouri

Phlox of sheep

Verbena Adonis Mango

Lavatera Twins white

Linaria Heavenly mix

Dahlia Bishops grandchildren

being new to WSing I am thrilled with everything, but sulphur cosmos (from Trudi- thank you!) were one of my first bloomers and are still blooming. have never had those before. also,
verbena bonariensis
zinnias
wave petunias (took awhile to bloom but are now a full carpet)

"I will take more pictures at regular intervals, and note how large the plants will be at maturity. Last year's plants are so big already! " Last Fall I started what I call "The Monday Morning Photo Project". Every Monday morning, I go out with my camera and photograph my whole yard and gardens. I take full views of the different gardens, but close up of what is budding, what is in full bloom, and what is dieing off. Fall was an odd time to start, but it did get me in the habit and I did photograph every Monday, even throughout the whole winter. I like the commitment I made to weekly photos. In the past I would just go out when things looked pretty, I didn't always get an accurate date of when flowers were in full bloom, and I never got the whole sense of how long the blossoms lasted. I could always tell you when my first daffodil bloomed. But I could never tell you when the last one died off. Having the record for the full year will really help me next Fall when I want to plant more bulbs - I have made a point to photograph areas that were lacking in certain bulbs - so now I'll know where to plant them. And as I continue to photograph over the summer, I should have a great record of where I'm lacking color or blossoms at any time, and thus will help me with planting next spring.

Something I propagated this year were 18 cuttings from my Walker's Low catmint. The other day I decided to look at them to see if they had rooted and 3 out of the 4 I looked at had really nice big healthy roots so I transplanted them into the garden. I think most of the others will have roots as well but it started pouring rain so I quit! Yah, I'm a wimp, but the mosquitoes came out full force when it started raining. I'll definitely take more cuttings next spring as I'd like to edge some of the beds with it, especially my rose garden.

What will you do differently next year?

The garden is now 7 years old. Next year will be the year of propagation every which way there is to do so. Cuttings, division, collect and grow from seed, etc. No purchasing any new plants, plant exchanges don't count, I said "no purchases" ( right Vicki, we can do it) With all the new babies it will be time to establish a pot getto, the true sign that I have crossed over some kind of line in my gardening life. The other must is to master the art of composting. There is a 6'x3'x4' pile of pulled weeds, pruneings and dead headed flowers in the back corner of the yard. It has been growing there for 3 seasons hidden by the above ground pool. Next year I will dig it out and see what there is. Then that spot will be the new home of a proper compost pile.

I bought four big Needlepoint holly bushes (summer close-out sale at Lowe's - 75% off!). They are loaded with red berries. Going to move my roses (again) and other flowering plants over into the former potager garden with the irises (some new and some I dug up, thinned out and transplanted in there. The lavender cuttings are growing really fast and are already 2+ feet tall and very bushy. They are planted along the terrace edge. The roses will go in there. I planted the rosemary plants I rooted in there. The climbing Don Juan will got next to the entrance arbor, opposite the yellow climber on the other side. In the area where the roses are now, I am planting some St. Augustine grass in there. I got it from my dad's yard. He dug starts of it out of my yard in Louisiana 20+ years ago and now it will come home, so to speak. I want to plant one of the hollies on the south end and move the Dogwood down to that area to provide shade in summer. I need shade at the back of the house so I can sit out on the patio, since I never got my covered veranda (pergola). I want to add more evergreens for winter interest and create a cool, lush area around the patio, but nothing right against the patio on account of snakes. I hope to extend the patio area out into the new lawn. I planted one very blue Colorado Blue Spruce last year on the upper side of terrace behind the patio. It was small and since they tend to be rather slow growers, it will be awhile before it becomes the lovely specimen tree I dream of it one day becoming. I have a friend who works at a place where they sell recycled Rail Road ties. "Just bring your little red truck and we'll filler up"! Those will be the new "bones" of my patio terracing. I want to build it up about 3 feet above the patio area. I think it will look pretty nifty - perfect in my "rustic" country cottage style yard. I have a little round preform pool to set in the ground somewhere...just a little reflection pool in a cool area of the garden with my little garden girl statue set beside it, as if she is looking into the pool. I have a great place in mind. Well, that sounds like a lot of "bones" to dig up and relocate, but I already have a bit of a start on it and if I do it like that, a little at a time, by mid-summer next year, God willing, it should look like it has been that way for years and it shouldn't be too hard on MY bones. I'll second that on the 'Cherokee Purple' tomatoes! They are my favorite so far, out of all of the ones I'm growing.

Nancy, I am glad to see that Verbena 'Adonis Mango' is on your list, because I've already bought seeds to try that one next year.

New for me this year, and on the must have list for next year are:

African Daisy 'Buff Beauty'
Gazania Daybreak and Kiss series
Petunia 'Prism Sunshine'
Portulaca 'Sundial Mango'
Zinnia 'Profusion Apricot'

Plus tons of new things I can't wait to try!

This is the most flowers I've ever grown thanks to the enablers here. LOL! New to me that did well:

Datura (Mom loves it. It's in her flower bed.)
Cosmos (Who knew they were so easy to grow!)
Variegated Nicandra
Petunias (Who knew they were so easy to grow!)

zinnia zowie flame, got to have tons of these
zinnia old mexico got have tones of these too

dahlia fireworks. just beautiful have to have lots and lots of these

torenia blue and white

cannas, don't care if they bloom or not, mine haven't so far, but the leaves are just something to see and will grow them for the leaves only any time.

several different japanese morning glory that are just starting to bloom now.

Hungarian broom corn
marigold Capriccio
marigold Queen Sophia
sunflower Lemon Aura
sunflower Green Heart

These are all on the list for next year!

Mignonette, it really smells heavenly, and you can smell it at a distance.

Heliotrope Mini Marine. It didn't do very well at first, took forever to grow to a decent size, but again, the scent is really lovely.

Clarkia Bottae "Lilac Pixie". It put an incredible show in the late spring. Not my favorite color, though.

Scabiosa "Black Knight". It has made me want to find more flowers that same color.

Mexican hat - the red ones... they just won't quit!
Coral nymph salvia - hummers haven't seen it, but I love it
Pygmy torch amaranth - cute little thing!
Yellow blackberry lily - technically not new this year but first blooms this year
Sweet Annie - mmmm!
Rudbeckia Chocolate Orange - flower colors change throughout the life of the bloom, I really like it!
Ipomoea hederifolia - the hummers *did* find this! More of them next year...

Salvia 'Coral Nymph' - absolutely beautiful and the hummers love it too!

Zinnia Profusion Apricot - pretty color, neat clumps, I may try other colors of Profusion series next year.

Snapdragon 'Black Prince' - these are gorgeous and still blooming away, while the Snapdragon tall mix have faded away. But they were much shorter than I expected so they'll go in the front of the border next year.

Scarlet runner bean 'Painted Lady' - has bicolor red and white blooms that are really pretty.

Cardinal climber (Ipomoea x sloteri) - VERY vigorous grower, and finally started blooming in the last couple weeks with pretty red tubular flowers. The hummers love this too.

I'm sure there are others and I WS'd lots of perennials, many will not bloom this year so we'll see.

Not new to me, but definitely sowed next year:

orange cosmos - so happy-looking and they bloom forever
nicotiana "fragrant cloud" - yum
blue larkspur
amaranths - red, gold
verbena bonariensis
abelmoschus manihot
Grandpa Ott's morning glory - I only have a couple this year, and they're wonderful when they cover a fence
4 o'clocks - I need more than I have this year
zinnias that aren't red - all of mine are red this year from two mixed packages - how is this possible?
icelandic poppies - these are wonderful, and mine are still blooming and have been since May
columbine - I keep trying for the McKana hybrids but the leaf miners get the babies
