Ada's flower, 2nd scape

Donna, I think this was for YOU!

Here's the second scape. It's been open for a couple of days. {{gwi:427901}}

Red is a deep red. In thinner spots if the light hit's it right, it's an orange-y red, but to me...it's red. If the whole flower were that color....yum!

I got a bulb last year called BONFIRE...and to me, the red's are the same intensity...Bonfire is solid and AF is (obviously) not. Speckles of amazing red.

Shape....you be the judge. She's not flat, but not too cupped. L-bloom has been fully open 3 days and R-bloom may not be fully open...hard to tell because she's admiring the stars!

It looks like the other scape accidentally selfed (or could have crossed with Russian Halo, but I doubt it) and I have a nice pod coming. YEA!

Now THAT'S really beautiful...it makes such a difference when the flower is fully opened! Nice shape to the petals and I love the dotting and thick picotee! Gets my vote!! It's coming though more red on my computer and monitor this time with just a tinge of burnt orange. Whatever color, it's just beautiful.

Hope you have luck with your seed pod, up till now none of my seed pods have matured with these Maguires'. But, I have a few more in the works....hopefully yours will...and be big and fat with extra seeds.... Thanks for posting this again!

Wow she's a real beauty.
Even though I live in Australia and can easily order these bulbs I haven't really wanted them until I see their photos here. You all take wonderful photos that show such detail.

The sand leek (Allium scorodoprasum) is also sometimes called rocambole and usually but not always has bulbils along with the flowers. Elephant garlic is also sometimes called and even sold incurrectly as rocambole. The sand leek will have small bulbs with small cloves, and the elephant garlic will have large cloves on bigger bulbs or simply as big rounds and will have much heavier and robust foliage, while the sand leek is much daintier. If that is the foliage in the picture, I would guess that you got elephants that were originally identified as rocambole, or perhaps one of its wilder leek relatives such as the kurrat or Egyptian leek which is a bit smaller than the closely related elephants and there are several strains of each of those as well. Looks like one of the leeks to me. (they are all edible)

Rita;Thank you, I just love them lilies.I have had people stop in the middle of the street when I was outside and yell at me, asking what are them Red flowers.One even parked in my yard and got out to come get a closer look at them and ask what they were.They do attract attention as they are so bright,and so pretty.yes, the Daylily certainly gets a A for effort.I was so disappointed that it didnt open up all the way, but, it has more buds, so maybe next time it will open good. CINDY, Thabnk you. the days got warmer, was 83 today, and the nights are suppose to warm up, too. NANCY:MAYBE your lilies will bloom soon, too..I never knew anything like these existed until I seen the pictures that Rita posted of hers.So many gorgeous lilies, that I never knew existed.I guess the orientals bloom around July and August ? I was disappointed in the daylily when it didnt open up right, but, it still has more buds on it, so maybe one of them will open wide.at least,I can see its going to be a beauty when it blooms right. I think you are right Rita. After I purchased it is when I actually started inquiring about it to some northern growers and hybridizers. Many of them said it blooms ugly for them. Made me start 2nd guessing my purchase after I saw that 1st bloom. I can't use pollen from an ugly daylily. I have a bad habit of seeing something I like, buying it, then figuring out how to take care of them...lol Julia I hope your CE blooms improve for you. Glad to know I'm not the only one that looks at some of my purchases when they bloom and wonder what was I thinking. Also, glad to know that most daylilies grow out of their ugliness. Andrea

Donna, glad the color is more clear this time. She is a keeper for sure. She has no roots yet, so am hoping for some soon for her continued success. Most of the other Macguire's bulbs have plunked down lots of roots...but there's always one holdout.

Dizzy...so glad you are back on the list!!! Hope all is well with you. As your springtime unfolds we look forward to lots of photos from you (in your spare time when you aren't chasing an active youngster around!!).

A lot of Maguires blooms are really lovely dotted which I like a lot. Thanks for showing, this is a candidate for interesting crossings, I'd love to see crosses with pink varieties.

I don't have many hippeastrums flowering this year. My trusty papillios are sending up their flower stems but the others are just leafing out. I have pots and pots of seedlings thats waiting for the sun, thanks to Maria and all of you guys.
Will post pics when I get a chance.

Funny, I just realized those are the lace curtains I bought in Holland, forever ago, that are in the bathroom. Maybe she feels right at home and it brings out the best in her!

For Kristi et al...

Well, here is my Ada's Flower..she had no roots and kept toppling over so reluctantly I had to pick the scape..there is another scape on the way..4 flowers to each scape, but I doubt if the second will open..very stressed bulb, has shrunken from the size of a golf ball to the size of a walnut!

But....she is a beauty..covered with freckles, my color is definitely not red, but a brick/orangy red and the weaker flowers have a brick/pinky look to them. I suspect that if she can grow roots that another time she will be a stunner!

As with so many of these Maguires, there is a very broad picotee which I just love, and the dotting on this is very even and well, I think she is beautiful. My Tammy Tucker bloomed also and she is exactly the same as Ada's Flower, but a raspberry pink..same situation with the bulb, but I love this one also..take a look..

Josh, Is that the only one that is shooting up for you..of 14 bulbs, about 7 have bloomed, several more with buds emerging and only 3 with just leaves...make sure you post all your pictures please..stressed or not...about 5 or 6 are already anchored with roots...you can go to LP if you'd rather...

Your Ada's flower is soooo nice. I hope mine rebloom. They are fat and sassy....but.....you know...:-(

Keep posting here if you can. I don't "do" LP...too many lists, so little time!

Hey Guys :)

Donna, out of my five three are pushing up scapes which include 'Pencilled Pepi', 'Rebel' and 'Miss-B-Haven'.. I'm HOPING 'Envy' and 'Party Pooper' start soon as I'm really excited about both of them.

I think I got mine about a week later than others and I kept mine cool and dormant to scatter blooming and to accustom to northern hemisphere easier.

It seems 'Pencilled Pepi', 'Envy', 'Rebel' have put down roots where as the other two don't seem anchored well!

I will keep everyone posted and OF COURSE I will post my pictures here ;)
