Im new, just retired, where do I start?

I wand to have a perennial garden and plants are sooo expensive. Is this winter sowing something a newbie can do? Where do I start? I would appreciate any help you can give me. I am in the western north Carolina mountains and want to grow perennial flowers. Could I buy seeds now and sow for next years plants?

Welcome, Smokey. I too was retired and a newbie, and since starting to winter sow in 2006, I have more plants than I have room for. I suggest you first go to Wintersown.org and read it all. You can also start collecting containers for your seedlings. Some use milk jugs, 2,6,and 8 - litre pop bottles, whatever you can come by. Try not to spend too much money on them. You can also try to stock up on your choice of growing medium which will probably be going on sale soon. I use a soilless seed-starting mix - PROMIX is very popular but I buy what is available. Then rather than buy seed you can get seed from the exchange forum. Many gardeners offer Newbie packs for postage. You can also find out from the Wintersown database what will grow well in your area. I urge you to 'start small' because it will become addictive and a bit overwhelming until you get your routine down. I have expanded into a lots of vegetables and herbs which I use in my kitchen. This forum is subscribed to many knowledgeable gardeners, so don't be shy to ask questions as you go along. As I used to say to my students, the only stupid question is an unasked one. Another thing to do is to 'search' the plants you plan to grow on this forum and you will probably find some valuable threads that answer your question. So get reading...and good luck!!

Perfect timing! I discovered GardenWeb in the fall--in time to collect seeds for my first winter sowing season (about 10 years ago). If you have friends & neighbors with gardens, ask if you can collect dead flowers from their plants. (See the 'seed saving' forum) Not all perennials will bloom their first year but many will. Also check the 'seed exchange' forum--some offer free if you send them return postage. Collected seeds do not always grow true to their variety--but sometimes the variety you get is more interesting. Even buying seeds is cheaper than plants--Google seed catalogs, many will send free catalogs--plus most are on the web. I like Park Seed for the info included and Thompson-Morgan for great variety.

It's unlikely that you have warm season grass. The reason it doesn't go dormant in the heat is that you're watering it enough to keep it green. The most common lawn grass for the Wasatch front is Kentucky bluegrass. A lot of "drought tolerant" mixes, especially cheap ones, have a high percentage of K-31 (sometimes called KY-31 or Kentucky-31). Stay away from these. Despite the fact that the name has Kentucky in it, it's not Kentucky bluegrass. It's a pasture form of tall fescue. It's very hardy, but it's wide bladed, grows faster than other lawn grasses and tends to get clumpy over time. Picking a time to seed is tough. You need to wait until the heat of the summer breaks and that may not be until some time in September. Then, you want to make sure you plant 6 weeks before the expected first frost, which is early October. Oops, only 4 weeks after heat broke. In the spring, if you wait for all the snow to melt, you'll almost certainly be planting too close to summer heat, so the grass won't have a chance to establish before the heat kicks in. I've had the best results with dormant seeding. To dormant seed, wait until just before the first good snow and seed at a slightly higher than normal rate. The normal freeze/thaw cycles and any snow melts will carry the snow into the soil. In the spring, the melting snow and occasional rain will provide enough moisture for the grass to germinate.

"predfern" offered some very good advice. I was going to type something along the same lines. (great minds think alike?) I read an article the other day that I think you might be interested in. They have some further recommendations for roses hardy in your zone (and some even colder!). The skinny of it is that these roses are distantly descended from the species roses from the North American prairies as opposed to the Tea roses from China. You might also want to check the local extension office associated with the university and see what roses they think would do well. Best of luck! Be aware of lead times that are still fairly long and have your selections made in time to get materials onsite without delaying installation. We’re getting close to the finish line and the longest lead times we’ve experienced so far are: Appliances > 10 months (possibly longer) Transformer upgrade and electrical connection > 6 months Cabinets > 5 months Windows > 4 months Gutters > 2 months This means you’ll need to make decisions around related items early to get these on order. Your exterior design will need to be done so you know which windows to order. Kitchen design also needs to be finished so cabinets and appliances can be ordered. Things like lighting fixtures, plumbing fixtures, tile, etc. are periodically out of stock, so it helps to buy early. Which brings up… Have space to store materials as they’re delivered. We’re finding that things can take months to come in, but once they do the suppliers often demand that we take delivery RIGHT NOW. Several have said that they’ve run out of storage space.
