I just wanted to post a couple of "baby photos". These are the best 4. There are a few more....but these were the most "photogenic"!!

Heheeee... Wanna know what I thought this pics looked like when I first saw them?? Nah....I'll keep it to myself.

So what are we seeing? Roots? It is so hard to see a bulb there-- I'm really glad you're documenting these all!

No Ryan....I really think they are baby bulbs!...I think there are little niblets of roots growing on the bulbs too, but apparently too hard to see (especially with a dirty mind!) ROTFLMAO!! Maybe you'll have assurance these are bulbs when they get bigger.

What a great thread!!! Thanks, Buck for asking this question. I am new to winter sowing too....this past winter was my first. I intended to plant about 50ish containers and did over 100. I had one I forgot to label but now know that it is monarda lambada and it is blooming nicely. I had two containers that the labels faded out...still don't know what they were. I discovered halfway through that I really didn't need to plant every seed in every packet and I got over the guilt rather early of not sowing the gift seeds that I really wasn't interested in. I do still have plastic containers out in the yard with seedlings in them....blooming nicely...kind of like container gardening but yucky containers for that purpose. My husband still loves me and encourages my new obsession ;*) he even tilled me a holding bed for my perennials. I am in a weird part of zone 5 and have discovered that most of the annuals I love don't germinate soon enough to provide the blooms I want for the summer. There are a few that did fine though and those I will winter sow again...the others I will either sow indoors or purchase. I don't know what zone you are in but I want to point out that the warmer zones get results a lot sooner than the colder zones (I know that is obvious but it was frustrating that they had sprouts and I had snow!). This has been a fun and wonderful experience for me. It really helped with the winter blues and has improved my garden with plants I never would have bought but have grown from seed just fine. Thanks, everyone!! alii, Your babies are welcome at "CC's Place, Where the feeders are clean and the nectar is always fresh". bdriver71, Western Tn, halfway between Memphis and Nashville. lfn, I have some Lobelia cardinalis in bog planters on my deck which a little female has guarded all summer. I also have lots of Cleome spinosa which the hummers love. I planted the Cleome about 25 years ago, and it's reseeded every year since - absolutely carefree. I've read so much on this forum about the "Black & Blue" and "Lady in Red" salvias, that I'll probably try some in containers on my deck next year. I live in the middle of the woods, and the hummers have hundreds of acres of the native plants with which they evolved. The 12 evergreens (Eastern red cedar & American holly) in my backyard are one reason (IMO) that my place is a 'hummer hub'. They provide shelter, cover, and nesting sites. That's ok Donna, it is hard not to worry when you don't see them. Because I feed the Blues they alway end up bringing the babies to the feeders until the leave in the Fall. I would worry about them too if they left after fledging. I really don't think the Dees are in the woods by our house. I went down to the park today where I monitor nestboxes. It is about 2-3 blocks from my house and the closest woods other than our small one. The park is 32 acres, 10-20 wooded, I would guess. I was rewarded with seeing two chickadee families in the trees showing the little ones how to hunt for bugs. I couldn't tell the difference between the adults and the little ones but I could see some feeding the others. I watched them for awhile and a great crested flycatcher flew into the tree by them. Then I turned around and noticed a huge tree further off the trail in the woods, got the binocs and could see a racoon head sticking out of a hole in the tree, it was sleeping. Later walking out I saw a doe and a fawn the exact same time they saw me and they were gone in a flash. Just had to share that. lol! Anyway I around here the Dees are not at the feeders in the summertime even though they are here year round, the summer is for bug eating so I am sure they just took their little ones in the bigger woods (maybe one of the families I saw) and are showing them how to hunt bugs. Come late summer they start showing up at the feeder, I sure won't know if they are the ones that nested here but I will be glad they are back. Do you know if the Dees like to renest where they had a successful nesting, I am wondering if this pair will nest here again next year. Donna

WOW a late starting college. Around here they all started this week or last. My last one left five years ago. It struck me how so many HUGE IMPORTANT worries : GPA, scholarship apps; FINALS mean nothing so fast. Keep yourself busy the next week or so. There are so many tunnels we just have to walk through and this one is HUGE. Transitions smack us when we least expect them it seems. What is it they say the hours are looong but the years are short. We decided with our first--at the brink of the cell phone age--that if he wanted his college money contribution then he had to call us once a week. We are not helicopter parents, when they launch they launch. They have to learn how to do this and so we committed to leaving him to it if he checked in EACH week.They all chose Universities too far away for weekend visits--which we encouraged.Now at 28, he just finished his Masters that his employer paid for, got married this summer and he still calls EVERY SUNDAY. The habit stuck with the daughters also. I live for Sunday and the hours these calls absorb. It helped me to remember myself at that age. I NEEDED my space, my life. I would not steal that from my own!! This year is our first to not have everyone here for Christmas. I have spent the last few days dealing with THAT emotional shock. We will see the newlyweds the weekend before..I set the bar NOW--I need us to have everyone together if not ON Christmas then near by.

Amazingly, now each piece has at least 1 if not 2 bulblets. Some really are getting little root nubbins (very scientific term). Fingers crossed that I get many new bulbs out of this experiment and they will be "clones" of GORDIE! Have lost a couple of pieces to mold, but remaining pieces are looking great. Guess you're bound to loose a few. So...looks like I'll be setting up "lights" in the back bedroom to grow them up during the winter months. Will need some advise on that!

Ryan, Ryan, Ryan... I don't know about you... you have quite the vivid imagination... but you're not the only one... you should hear Larry's description of some orchid flowers! You'd die of embarrassment!

Focus, dude! See the tiny little bulbils in between the slices of older bulb tissue? Yes, Ryan... that's bulb tissue! LOL!

To me, they look a little like potato slices... although, why you'd want potato slices in the cat box is beyond me! LOL!

I imagine that once those little guys develop decent roots, they could be potted... they're really coming along nicely!

Well they don't look like this anymore. Several are under the lights. The bulbs are all nice and green and some even have roots and leaves! Just 8 weeks after the splitting!
