Salvias - Blue Bedder & Victoria.....

My salvias looked the best in the spring, now that it is over 100 degrees almost everyday, they are sulking and they really are not putting out great looking blue stems. I know I am supposed to deadhead for more blooms, and I do.

But what would happen if I cut them lower - the actual stem with the leaves, would I get any blooming at all or would I mess up the process? (As you can tell, I need to take a gardening course....)
