Hi everyone,

Here are some pictures I took a few days ago of some more plants that I winter sowed. Enjoy!!!!

Tropical Milkweed (I would love to sow this again!)

Asters "Crego Mixed Colors" (There are more open today, mostly pink and purple)

Soapwort

Verbena bonariensis (another favorite of mine)

I love Crego Asters they are one of my favorite annuals. Your milkweed is very lovely as well.

OK, thanks, I think I'll give it a whirl then and WS them. Never have grown them from seed before so I wasn't sure what to do. Kmpsmom, our weather here in Zone 6B tends to be sort of similar to Zone 7, so that's great to know you had success with WS'ing them. We had a cool spring and summer here in PA too because of all that rain. Aliska12000, I think I'll hold a few pansy seeds back too, that's a good idea. Maybe I'll sow them in containers in the spring just to see how those work. Thanks again for your follow up posts! Now I just need to get more seed starting mix...

Susan, Oh, okay, I don't know what I was thinking that you had started them indoors. I'm hoping that I'll get a head start on them this way. I didn't plant quite all of them yet because I wasn't sure if I was starting them too early. Now that our last frost date is about two months from now (April 15), I suppose that I could start the rest inside. My problem is that I ran out of containers and will have to go get some more. I have all of my individual one and two-gallon ones used with my swamp milkweed started outside, and the smaller individual ones have butterfly weed and tropical milkweed in them. Then I also have 3 flats (72 in a flat) with swamp milkweed in two of them started outside and butterfly weed in the other one. Then I also have butterfly weed and tropical milkweed started in cups. I probably am up to close to 300 milkweed plants here, assuming that the seeds all germinate (I put two in each container), and I'm not even done yet. lol Of course, then there's the Chelone glabra, Zizia aurea, Zizia aptera, Heraculeum maximum, Foeniculum vulgare azoricum, and Angelica atropurpurea seeds from you that I have winter sown. I started some snapdragons inside, Blazing Star Liatris, also Agastache foeniculum and Blue Fescue (I suppose I could have winter sown those last two). I'll direct sow my lupines, zinnias, cosmos, and dill. There, I think I remembered everybody. :) I want to try to locate a small spicebush around here. I wonder if there'd be any harm in digging one out and relocating it here at the edge of our yard next to the woods? A sassafras tree would be nice too. Of course, I'm thinking about other plants for next year...I'd even plant a paw paw tree if I knew that I could get ZST up here, but my Butterflies Through Binoculars book shows their range ending around the southern border of PA. There are so many different kinds of butterflies that I'd like to attract here, but I don't think I want to dig up our whole backyard. :) It's snowing a lot here right now. Schools let out at noon today and have already cancelled for tomorrow. I suppose the weather will soon clear up out your way. Come on spring! Cathy

That sounds great Lisa! It's always nice to teach a class, and WS is so easy that people figure it out right away. You're welcome to print out whatever you want from WinterSown.Org. I suggest you tell the class to bring empty clean milkjugs, salad containers, soil, and you bring seeds, tape, knife scissors and printouts. Bring some bags and coarboard boxes so everyone can take their containers home easily. Do NOT do watering of the containers at the site, but instead tell people for this occasion to bottom soak the containers at home. At the class talk about WSing principles, seed saving, sowing seeds, soltice sowing, and natural germination, etc--it's your class so make it your own and do it as you feel is important. For seed sowing help them make their containers, rub in their seeds and seal the containers. Don't forget to vent. It sounds harder than it is, the bulk of the work is in the preparation, but otherwise it's a fun class to teach and goes quickly. T

Hi! My name is Karen and I've posted some questions on the geranium forum and got some good advice, but noone is terribly chatty over there so I was wondering if this is a good forum for me to join. Are you taking new members?? I'm in IL and we started over 700 (agh!)pelargoniums, or whatever they are called. We call them geraniums. Anyway, I was told to pinch and went to town and I hope I did it right because I have some sad plants. And it's about time to start hardening off...and I haven't a clue what I'm doing! We have two portable greenhouses outside with heaters in them and we put the impatiens and pansies, I think, in there. But the geraniums are inside under grow lights and in sunny windows (as sunny as it gets during the long awaited IL 'Spring' if that's what you call it!) Can anyone help me keep them alive?

Isn't it exciting to watch those plants you've started from seed start as a teeny tiny seed, then a tiny sprout and grow and grow until the magical moment when it produces a flower? I love sowing plants from seed, it's more satisfying than buying already grown plants. Have you found any monarch caterpillars on your milkweed? I found about a dozen this year on my A. incarnata. They grow so fast and it's so cute to watch them munch away! I also have three black swallowtail cats on bronze fennel I sowed this year. They too are growing fast.

Karen, yes it's very exciting to watch little seeds turn into gorgeous flowers that everyone and everything can admire and enjoy. No caterpillar sightings as of yet, but I'm keeping my eyes open for signs!

They're all nice. I especially like the little soapwort because I found some growing on city property, picked a few, made a little boquet and photographed it. The milkweed is stunning! I tried verb. b., but it didn't germinate for me.

I didn't know how to collect seeds from the soapwort or if I could xplant them. Somebody on the web id'ed them for me. I love to go trekking around to see what's growing among the weeds in neglected places. I have found some real treasures (to me) I wish I could have saved. One was a lovely shrub. I made jam from some wild grapes, I didn't like it but my friend did.

Ah then I found this lovely bindweed. Luckily someone warned me. I think I had one stringer this year climbing my gypsophilia. I unwound it and yanked it out.

Nice selection. I also found caterpillars on my milkweed and grow them just for that reason. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful Brad. Where did you get the Tropical Milkweed seeds? I would like to get some.

Ladyrose, I got my seeds last year in a trade. If I get any seeds off of my plant, I'll save some for you :). It's very easy to grow and care for. I forget when I winter sowed it but it sprouted very nicely.

I also wanted to say that yesterday I found a tiny caterpillar on my swamp milkweed (winter sown) and after looking at it closer again today, it's a tiny Monarch caterpillar! Plus, the swamp milkweed has buds!
