I have two Desert Museum Palo Verde's. One I'm growing single trunk, the othre Multi-Trunk. I want the multi Trunk one to be a focal point in the back yard. It should look beautiful with it's canopy of bright yellow flowers in the spring, and the Jacaranda immediately behind it, and much taller with it's canopy of lovely lavendar flowers.

I've been told by someone who grows both that the Emerald PV has a lusher canopy and thus a heavier shade. So I guess it depends on how heavy of a shade you want in the area. I didn't want to much shade because I want my roses to still bloom, that is why I made the choice I made with both Palo Verde's.

IMHO, both the Desert and Emerald have superior bloom to the native PV with the thorns. Which is the other advantage. Desert and Emerald do not have thorns.

I have one of the Emeralds. It's really growing great, but of course, it's been getting flood irrigation every two weeks since last Feb They are known to be fast growers, so it's probably not just the flood... I wish I could find the picture of it in full bloom that AZtreelvr had posted. Definitely incredible. Just remember, though - you'll be cleaning up the spent blooms if you put anything underneath it - I saw one of the Cacti/Succulent folks with a gorgeous yard full of succulents that were all frosted with yellow blooms.... ooops...

What I really want to know is how long it'll keep this dark green bark - I have small hopes that it'll be like the Palo Breas (which is another one I'd recommend, if only for it's wonderful trunk shape)but it'll probably turn brown at some point.

Here is the link to the photo of the Sonoran Emerald tree in bloom. Arizona Wholesale Growers in north Phoenix propagates this tree and holds the trademark. They have an extensive dealer network so you should be able to find it at most local nurseries, but not the 'big box' stores who seem to insist on buying much of their plant material from other states.

I love the gold shadow under the PaloVerde trees. It's part of their beauty.

We have both - Got the emerald at bakers, the desert museum (2 of them) at home depot. Both gorgeous and happy, easy to grow. You can't go wrong with either!

I have the Desert Museum. Bought a beautiful specimen at Costco of all places. It's in a part of my yard that is not flood irrigated (and that has terrible soil), but that hasn't slowed it down. It grew so fast that it bowed over earlier this year, but we staked it up and so far, so good. My only problem is figuring out how to prune it to keep a good shape. It seems to want to take off in all directions. I *love* the blooms and it does bloom longer than the other PV tree in my yard.

I've done pretty good on trimming up my single trunk Desert Museum Palo Verde, but I would love to make sure I undrstnad how to prune a multi-trunk. The DM I'm growing in the back yard is a Multi Trunk, and I want to make sure that it's branch structure is artistic and attractive..

BTW, once again, my Jacranda, this year is in bloom again. This is a weird Jacaranda. It blooms in the spring, then again in the fall. I love looking at it out the computer office window.

Thanks for all of the responses! We were at the DBG yesterday and found the Parkinsonia Praecox to be one of the finest specimens. The trunks and branches are truly amazing! Even though they produce small thorns, I think this is what we are going to plant. Time to bring out the pick ax!
