Heavy Pruning a African Sumac

Hi ALL -

I've posted before on the 3 African Sumacs in my backyard. They are soooooo messy and I hate the litter, but they are beautiful. Everyone who comes to our house comments on the lovely trees because they are multi-trucked and old and interesting. We have one that is growing in a cut-out on our back patio and the other 2 are in the yard. We have considered cutting down the one in the patio since the litter on the patio is bad, but the problem with planting something else in the hole and there is an electrical line for a patio light that we would have to deal with, have made us wonder if we could do a severe heavy prune on the trees to see if that cuts down on the litter. I can hack at these trees and nothing kills them, I just don't know how to do a heavy prune. Any suggestions on if this will help or not or if we should just cut it down. I hate too tough as the trunks are so interesting.

Allison
