front yard help - getting rid of large bed - pics
Comments (25)@ woody, my main complaint about the wedge beds is not how they affect or don't affect maintenance, but that they look bad. To have the arrowhead shape bed greeting you as you arrive into its space is not friendly and welcoming. It's not attractive in ground hugging 2-d design. If it's a 3-d shape, it's attractiveness lessens with every inch of height it gains. The shape is in contradiction to the growth patterns of almost any plant. Usually these beds are planted in contradiction to their true shape which helps lessen the mistake of their existence. How about offering a picture of any pointed bed that proves me wrong? @ growsveges, overall, I like the shape of the beds/lawn in your last picture. It's remarkably similar to my first suggestion with a couple of detail differences. The only part of it with which I take exception is completely confining the walkway to the front entrance with a planting bed. If what was planted in the bed in front of the entrance was very low, I don't think it would be horrible. If it was very low, colorful flowers that added a lot of cheer, it could even be good. Other than that, it seems to some degree a contradiction to have an expanse of green velvet carpet that leads to the front entrance and then as visitors actually get there, tell them to go elsewhere and enter a different way. Even if people won't actually access the entrance via the front lawn, the appearance that they could completes a thought process that seems logical and sensible. Being confined by foliage along a walk is not necessarily a pleasant experience....See MoreDo you like your synthetic lawn?
Comments (30)Love Ours! You get the quality you pay for & the newer type we have had for nearly 2 years works great. The base of it is a matching green mesh, not solid plastic or rubber like older or cheaper versions. We have a large patch in our back yard to add green softness among the rest of the gravel, rock & xeriscape plantings. The grass itself isn't "hot" like concrete & imitates the same heat as the soil underneath real grass. Ours never had a plastic smell, it doesn't come close to "melting" & it looks real. It is installed on a packed red clay base and filled & raked with sand to keep blades separated like real grass. Our dogs pee & poop on the grass & rock, both. During non-raining seasons, I occasionally rinse both with a hose to percolate urine & dissolved solid wastes and dust through the underlying base & soil. Otherwise, the urine lays on top of the dry clay or rock plastic underlining & can smell. We had pea gravel installed over a fabric underlayer in pedestrian areas that allows water to pass through. The City of Mesa, AZ rebated us with $500 for removing the Bermuda grass (BIG water waster that stuck to dogs' coats and was deposited on indoor & patio floors ) that the previous owner left along with rock over plastic (fabric is best). It never needs mowing & gardener blows debris from rock & artificial grass easily with his regular maintenance. My grandsons play on it; never have mud or puddles with water play because when properly installed, it drains promptly. Weeds do not grow in it. Some HOAs do not allow it in front, probably because early versions did look fake. Our son-in-law installed his in 2006 front & back with HOA permission and it looks natural. No lawnmower in their garage, either. You might want to take another look at the better products! Good luck....See MoreOT how to get rid of fleas in the yard
Comments (26)When it comes to keeping your pet or backyard free of these trouble-causing insects and their bites, there are a few steps that you should take to ensure success. You can try to eliminate fleas from your yard is to treat the area with pesticides. Another thing that you can do to get rid of fleas in the yard is to spread diatomaceous earth around your home’s perimeter. This natural substance kills bugs by cutting through their exoskeletons and dehydrating them. The roundworm (nematode) idea is great because it works on contact with larvae and can be purchased online at garden stores like Home Depot. Comments (5)I would probably overseed this fall and in spring use a pre emergent herbicide like corn gluten meal. That would be the organic way. Or instead of corn gluten meal you could use a chemical pre emergent herbicide in spring. I have the same problem, but with putting in new flower beds etc. I will not get to mine until this fall either. I will probably put down a 1/4" layer of compost and over seed this fall around the end of September in zone 5. Then in spring I will use the corn gluten meal probably around the end of March or so unless I find out a better time. Lee...See Moresplats
