OT: Heirloom Roses Sale

Heirloom Roses is having a big clearance sale, $7.95 each for "own root" roses. They are not grafted. I've been quite pleased with past purchases, and of course, ordered a few more using the sale. They have an incredible selection of, what else, heirloom varieties.

Just wanted to let everyone know.

If you're looking for a strong shrub with a great fragrance and color, check out the variety 'Arizona'. I've grown it for twenty years, and it is a great variety.

Hi Ryan,

Thank you for the heads up on this great offer. I do have a few questions though; own root plants are a huge plus in my book, but how big are the plants when they arrive? Will they bloom the following year? I'm thinking about 'Arizona', 'Amazing Grace' and probably one more but I'm debating with myself whether or not I should actually order because I've had a bit of trouble with roses in my garden this year. We've had a very wet spring and summer has been pretty rainy as well and the few roses I have suffered (and still suffer) terrible black spot. Our summers here in Virginia are humid as it is and the heavy rains this year have not helped either. I do love roses though....decisions, decisions. If you could share your experience in regards to how big the plants are and when they start blooming, that'd be great. Thanks again.

Hi Pax,

They will be smaller than what you get at your local garden center for sure, but I've been amazed at how quickly they've grown this season for me. The plants I ordered this spring have even bloomed, maybe one or two buds per plant.

The pots are, I believe, 3" x 3", however they are deeper than a standard pot, extending maybe 6-7" deep.

I'm going to guess that since these plants are on clearance, they've been growing all season in their greenhouses, and are going to be probably pretty equal to where the plants I purchased this spring are now in my garden, at about a foot tall.

I have no intention of pruning (beyond simple deadheading) any of these roses for at least another year. I figure in that amount of time, I will be able to tell which will be the dominant canes, and then I can prune for shape and overall health.

Darn. I would have tried Chaucer, but they're out of that one. Edit: I caved. I bought Wife of Bath. Rationalizations: I have no Austins, and everybody should have at least one. Everyone should have at least one old Austin and Wife of Bath is one of the oldest. (Hmm. It's one year younger than I am, so not sure how I feel about that.) I haven't tried an Austin with the myrrh fragrance yet. It's on sale.

So $33 for a gallon isn't a great sale, but if you get the free shipping it's alright. They've got pink roses on sale, and I know someone on here was asking about Scarborough Fair earlier. They've even got some of their pink OGRs in the sale too!

I honestly think they are starting to hear about their prices being so high. Now they are having decent sales. Before they would brag about a sale only to find the roses were only like $2 off. But 20% is decent. That comes to about $32 for most roses. With shipping that’s still pretty expensive (chamblees is $18 when you include shipping), but it’s not much more than say RVRs who sell bands for $20 before shipping. (Still pricey, but not insane).

I buy from Heirloom regularlly. Most of their bands are small but healthy. I usually repot them into a gallon sized pot and let them size up before putting in the garden. THis is because I often loose them under bigger plants in the garden until it is too late. I also lost some to a heavy freeze when I was away last fall, and they were still in the gallon pots. However, I have many lovely roses that are hard to find elsewhere bought over the years from Heirloom. I just ordered 2 Magic Meidiland for my daughter in Maine who has had fantastic luck with Mystic Meidiland. And for myself I Ordered Cameo Perfume, Eiffel Tower, Limelight,Tawny Tiger. I would have ordered more if I had any room left! I used to have EIffel TOwer and it is incredibly fragrant, as is Cameo PErfume supposed to be. Limelight goes in my new Green FLower Bed along with Lime Sublime and green echinaceas, primroses, St PAtrick Daffodils, etc, Tawny Tiger goes in by Hot Cocoa in the COffee Garden, and I guess Cameo Perfume goes in the pink garden unless I find a better spot!

You'll definitely have to post photos of your gardens, lizalily... they sound just wonderful!

I'm going to go check out Eiffel Tower now... LOL I can't resist a rose with a wonderful fragrance.
