Need good landscape contractor

I am about to put in our back yard and plan to put in paving and stone faced raised planter beds. I am trying to find a good contractor to do this work plus put in the irrigation. I will do the planting so they don't need to be plant experts but it would be a nice bonus.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I have had about 8 bids so far and while some of them are in the right zone I just haven't clicked with anyone yet.

Any ideas. Oh I'm in Chandler AZ.

I am in the exact same situation! I hope you get some replies (useful ones, unlike this one...) Care to share the names of companies that you deemed acceptable? I have found quite a few companies that won't travel to Chandler...(I am on the Chandler border)

Judy of Treetop Tree Service is wonderful for all your gardening needs. (Besides trees) She put my irrigation system in my home in Tucson - and I have flourishing gardens even though I am currently living and working in New York. Call Barry at Blooming Colors! Highly recommend. You may have to be on a wait list, but he's worth waiting for. I interviewed a lot of different people to re grade our back yard. We insisted on natural drainage. Everyone wanted to put in area drains. :( We did not want area drains. Barry was the only one who listened to what we wanted and understood what we were asking for. He didn't try to sell us on something else. His crew re graded, removed (most) of the bermuda, installed St Augustine, and layed out and put in rock edging for the new beds, added good soil to them, and even hauled in and spread horse manure that I found a few miles away from here. We got exactly what we wanted from Barry, and more. We're having them back out this week to put in a retaining wall & expand a flower bed for us. Hubby and I are very happy with his work, & crew. A gardening friend recommended him to us. She had used a company I was going to use and talked me out of them. Thank goodness she did! I would first start with asking for recommendations from friends. Most people select their contractor solely on price, so you have to be careful. If you like the Trane and Carrier equipment, then go the web sites and search for factory authorized dealers in your area. There is no guarantee they will be good, but it helps improve the probability. Explain the situation you have and ask if they will do a thorough Manual J calculation in order to determine the size of the equipment. You also want the duct work to be inspected to make sure it is the proper size. The proposals should have a complete list of all model numbers of the equipment and details of what work will be done. The contractor should be able to discuss and propose different equipment options and their pricing. If a contractor is unwilling to do these things then keep looking. Get at least three proposals. I recommend staying with the same brand so it makes easier to make comparisons. There is nothing wrong with comparing two brands as long as you understand the details of the equipment.

I'm not in NY and can't recommend a contractor, but it's no surprise to me that your friend hasn't gotten a firm bid. I wouldn't give a firm price on any remodeling project, much less on an old, complex architectural style like Queen Anne. My advice: take time to find contractors experienced in this type of work and check them out with the BBB and go see their previous projects. John

Need some good ideas for landscaping pool area

One other maintenance related landscaping consideration is how much water fowl it might attract as it matures... mainly if you have creeks or ponds in your neighborhood. We're in the Richardson area less than a block away from a park with a normally duck-filled creek running through it. We originally had the bed along our raised pool edge planted with mostly evergreen 'Ballerina' Indian Hawthorn,'Edward Goucher' abelia, and dwarf pampas grass (that turned out to be a mis-tagged standard) which the local mallards loved for the heavy cover they provided during their February to June nesting window. Initially we loved their visits, but as many as three nesting pairs over a season more than tripled our pool chemical costs and maintenance efforts; after which, it was still tough to keep the pool clear. Also, the ducklings had a zero survival rate in our rabbit-proof backyard unless we could get them relocated in time... which never left Momma duck very happy. We've eliminated the problem (so far) by replacing the evergreens with deciduous and much less dense semi-evergreen plants. The bit of additional gardening work for the spring clean-up/pruning is tiny compared with the effort/cost of keeping a pool clean with mallards in residence. An inflatable gator kept on the pool also reduces their "house-hunting" visits, though pretty certain they would learn to ignore it if they found the surrounding foliage more appealing. The deciduous bed has been an evolving experiment since 2011, so has actually been more fun from a gardening perspective. Though I do occasionally miss the more formal look and low maintenance of the evergreens, I would never go back to them for a pool bed in a neighborhood with a significant duck population.

I used a contractor called Distinctive Landscape Design. They are BBB registered and I am very happy with the work they did. I know they also work in the Scottsdale area. Let me know if you want their info. FYI no-one has registered any complaints about them at the BBB in 36 months! The few things I wanted fixed they did quickly and tried their best to fix one problem which was a miscommunication and partly my fault.

We just used David Aitchison at Around Town Landscaping. 623-780-0434. We had lighting, timer for drip, rose beds preped, new plants as well as existing plants moved. The estimate was very fair, time schedule was met and work was done as expected. I will say one thing about landscapers in our valley. The person you get the est from is the foreman and they don't show back up to do the work. You get a pickup full of non english speaking people. When we had to call David back to do some things he missed, he came with the crew and none left till I was happy. After 4 LS in 5 years he is the only one I would recomend.
