hurrah! remembered my sign in name . . . .

Hi, I re registered here a few months ago (used to post on houseplant forum a few years back) and promptly forgot my sign in name and password. Today, as if by magic, I remembered! (I'd written it down, but lost the notebook)

I have been reading this forum, and kind of 'caught the bug'. Love houseplants, have moved a few years ago, got rid of most of them, too busy/preoccupied to get any more for a couple of years. Then, they started slowly sneaking into my home (they hid out by the aquarium where it's nice & damp, I guess, cause they thrive. Not as many as before, but still, some nice ones)

Any way read this forum, and have ordered some amarillis. (it all started by my deciding to plant a bunch of daffodils and other bulbs this fall.) Much to my dismay, realized the bulbs wont be shipped til fall-----wwwwaaaahhhhh!!!!

In summer, I am motivated to be outdoors, work in garden, like all of you, I guess. In fall, I'm motivated to SIT outdoors, watch the leaves fall, the angle of the afternoon sun, the dogs frolicking, the shortening days . . . . I hope I'm up to planting all those hundreds of daffodils in autumn, when mostly I feel like sipping wine and eating cheese. Right now champing at the bit to hurry up and get involved in amarillis; alas, must wait til fall . . . . boo hoo! Looking forward to reading more about you guys experiences, and photos, knowledge. Sorry this is filled with the letter 'I', will keep to a minimum from now on, hopefully.

Sherry, glad you found your way to us here! In one year you will be buried in amaryllis if you hang around with us, LOL. Becaues you will want one of everything someone else posts, be offered trades, parts in group orders, learn to cross breed and try them from seeds and be trading seeds! Ask me how I Know, ....I joined late last fall.

Yes, it is hard to wait for the autumn bulbs but I have my orders in too...where did you order from and what did you order...inquiring minds want to know!

Last year I ordered so many bulbs, as I got to see what other people were growing, and because I have a cut flower business where I sell the amaryllis flowers in winter bouquets. IT made a good excuse to keep ordering, LOL...also I had both my knee replaced so they were my cheerer uppers.

I have orders in to Van Engelen, Royal Colors and replacements form McClure and Zimmerman... they sent me mislabeled bulbs last year. (Me and a whole lot of other people)

THhis summer I Am trying letting my bulbs grow outside under landscape fabric for the summer, and hope they all grow well and strong. It has abeen a bit of a learning curve for me so I AM not sure how many of them will be good viable bulbs this fall.

Well, welcome, tell us what you have ordered, and join right in! Its a great time to learn about them by reading the posts form the past, before your new bulbs arrive.

Hi Lizalily, I ordered the 'mixed' special from JohnScheepers, guess it's 7 common varieties. Cant recall all the names, but they were reds,& red & white, I think. I also ordered 2 more at a later date because I got so antsy about starting, but just now, cant recall what. I liked 'em, so guess it'll be ok.
Also ordered 2 from McClure & Zimmerman. Wrote it down somewhere (like my sign in name) but off hand dont recall. I would love to have some jumbo bulbs, but I looked at RC and they were sold out. Dont know if it was for the summer catalog or fall catalog.
My next dilemma is where to keep them? Thought I had a good place, but hub is putting in a wood stove there. So it has to be somewhere I can hang a shop light with grow bulbs, where kids, dogs, parrot wont bump or knock over. I guess with every new thing, there are new adjustments. I am looking forward to getting involved (if possible ) with buying in bulk with others, etc. (of course, where will I put those too?) It's going to b efun and something to bring a glow to winter gloomy days.
Love seeing the photos and reading posts, including the international posts.

Sandy, While Yellowstone has over 100 resident species of butterflies (including subspecies), being there at the right time of the season and in the right places is required to see very many of them on one trip. And many there are common species found in many other places in the west as well (although many of even those would not be found in OK). Surprisingly, not that many butterflies are seen along the "tourist" byways in the park, especially not the rarer or alpine species. To get the highest species count requires hiking into the back country to all the different ecosystems found in the park. For example, if I remember right there are 5-6 different types of meadow ecosystems alone in the park, and each has it's own group of resident species because of the available LFP’s. With a few exceptions, most alpine species are seldom seen in the lowlands. “Lowlands”… with an elevation of about 5,300’ to 11,000’ (average 8,000’) in YNP, some may not call a mile to mile and a half above sea level habitat a lowland, but us Rocky Mountain born and reared boys do. LOL Butterfly season there is mostly from June to August as on average those are the only three months when nigh time lows are barely above freezing. Those are also the three wettest months in the park, so the butterflies dive into the understory when a storm approaches and only come back out when the sun does. Can be several times a day sometimes, especially at higher elevations where you can also get snow storms even in July/August. So spring species in the lowland areas peak in mid to late June and all alpine species from about mid July to mid August. There are specific places and times for some specific species that won't be seen anywhere else except at those places/times. They are usually harder to get to and they are usually where the rarer species live. As you know I'll suggest, at least one day needs to be spent up on the Beartooth Plateau as a must do if you go to YNP and GTNP. It's a beautiful drive out the northeast entrance to Cooke City and up to the West Summit (11,011') at least on the Bicentennial Hwy 212 (that you can easily drive an RV on), as well as all the way to Red Lodge. Total road miles to Red Lodge is less than 70 miles, but the West Summit is only about 30 miles. You’ll see endless top of the world views up there with thousands of alpine lakes, waterfalls, more wildflowers than you can imagine, Grasshopper Glacier & Hell Roaring Plateau, etc. Mid July to mid August is the best time to be up there if you want to see millions of alpine leps all on the wing at the same time. But be prepared for snow any day during that time. If you want to spend more than a day on the BTP, the Top of the World Store (about 10 miles before West summit) has cabins they rent (at 9400'). BTW, if you’ve never been there do Grand Teton NP and Jackson Hole as well. And when in Jackson grab a meal at Jedidiah’s. The tropical regions of the America’s host the greatest diversity overall in lep species worldwide. So the possibility of 700 in Chile is not surprising at all. Is that at one location? Back when I was doing the tropics, a couple of colleges determined nearly 1500 at one small location in Tambopata, Peru, and 1300 near Tingo Maria. That fits though as Peru has the most lep species of any country worldwide with about 3800 (so far). Last counts I have records for shows Peru is followed by Equatorial Africa with 3600, Brazil, Columbia and Ecuador with 3200 each, Venezuela with 2300, Mexico with1800, Costa Rica and Panama with 1500 species each determined so far. Number 10 is missing from my list for some reason (and it was a Top 10 list). I’m not sure where Chile falls on the list. As for your ribbing: Since the lives of the Chilean people is so heavily shrouded in superstition turned folklore, I’d bet you’d hear a lot of tall tales there about butterflies, white or otherwise. ;) You’re getting to be quite a globe trotter with plans in the works for Laos, Mexico, Chile and YNP. This is from the FAQ. I was going to delete the line about every swap being cold and rainy, but the forecast as of today is for rain on Friday night. We'll see. Appropriate dress may be tank top and flip flops. chrisMD *********************************************************** **More Free Advice: Helpful Hints for the Day of the Swap** 1. Sign in with the swap organizer. If you need to find someone, check the sign-in list to see if they've arrived. 2. Wear a nametag. Put your Gardenweb name on it, and your real name if you want. Remember - you know what you look like but we don't, and our mental image of you is usually quite different from reality. 3. Spouses, significant others, children and other pets should also get a nametag "John, DH of ChrisMD" or whatever so we know who they belong to. That's also how we know who they aren't. 4. Dress appropriately. Every Maryland swap (fall and spring) has been rainy, grey and cold. You'll be outdoors for 3 hours so wear clothes that can get muddy and waterproof shoes. Eat lots of brownies to keep your body temperature up. Dress the spouses, significant others, children and other pets too so you don't have to listen to "Can we leave now?" for three hours. Feed them lots of brownies - chocolate is a sedative. 5. Bring a piece of paper and label your car with your Gardenweb name. We usually park nose-in and have the trunks open so you can just tape the car's "name-tag" to the top of the open trunk. This sounds really dumb but believe me it helps tremendously in sorting out who is who. 6. Label your plants, either ahead of time, or bring markers to the swap for those who don't play 'name that plant' too well. Cynthia keeps plant labels by the PC and as she agrees to prearranged trades, marks one side of the label with the plant name and the other side with the recipient's name. It also makes it easier for her to sort everything the night before the swap. Clean Popsicle sticks are cheap and make good labels. 7. If you have special trades, presort out each recipient's goodies as you fill your car. ChrisMD puts each recipient's together in a paper grocery bag, labels the bag with the Gardenweb name of the recipient, and leaves it next to her car. That way, people can find her car and find their bag of goodies even if she is not standing right there. This also saves carrying plants from car to car looking for trading partners. When you have a lot of trades, this is critical to YOUR enjoyment of the swap. 8. Remember, a lot of times trading is not directly one-to-one. A gives to B who gives to C who gives to A. There's plenty to go around. There's going to be a LOT of stuff coming to the swap and it's all going to have to leave with someone. The only traders who leave disappointed are the ones who insisted on one-to-one even-steven trades. 9. If you're a newbie and you see something that's new to you, ask what it is. We're happy to share our experience, and our hostas and our physostegias and our rudbeckias.... 10. Please come at the opening time if possible and expect to stay for a while. You'll need that long if you plan on talking to EVERYONE. Plus, we have all those brownie breaks. 11. Free for all is after lunch. Anything not traded or gifted before lunch must be taken home by anyone who even looks at it. If you ask a question, you get two. 12. If the police show up (they usually do) do not offer them Cleome. Offer them brownies. 13. Remember to HAVE A GREAT TIME!

Mike, VCR's very fragrant and smells just like a rose. Even with just this single bloom I can still detect faint whiff of it from a distance. I know a vendor in Oahu who sells VCR cutting for $16. If you want it, let me know and I'll be happy to pick one up for you when I'm there. Wow!! that Scentational is still there? I kinda wanted to get it last month but it wasn't on sale. $40 seems reasonable enough! :) Did you see that giant plumeria plant I found in the Asian market around here? Could it be a promising sign plumerias will soon be available in our state? LOL Kenny

rjinga, you're SO right! My gosh! and fori, what creeps me out on them is the little weird wings (see the pics below). They're totally vestigial and creepy (or maybe we've watched too much Dr. Who this past few weeks? LOL). The first one DD found didn't have wings, so maybe it's not a kewpie doll either. The other thing that creeps me out is the unforgettable saga of Rose O'Neill, honestly. She's such a figure of history, a crystallization of many womens' experiences in her era and yet someone who took hold of her fate and tried to do as much good with it as she could for the oppressed. Men and money kept taking her down, though. linda, here are the pics of the second find, with the mark in both orientations. This little guy is only about 4.5-5" tall, vs. around 11" tall for the 'toddler' one. dlm, THANKS for that link! Yes, the first one DD found is a toddler, for sure, but with *no* marks at all. Welcome, Sherry! We're always happy to have another Hippeastrum lover join us!

You do know... we can be a bad influence when it comes to collecting bulbs! It starts with just one, or a few... and then you come here to learn a little bit about them... and before you know it... you're completely, hopelessly addicted to bulb collecting! Every window sill in your home becomes a place for a pot... and soon, there's no room to stuff in any more, so you invest in grow lights... and soon after that, you're looking into a greenhouse purchase, because you want more bulbs!!

Collecting Hippeastrum bulbs is like driving a fast car... you go from 0 to 60 in no time flat! At least, I did! I'm now wondering where I'll put this fall's purchases! There's no question that there WILL be purchases, but where they will go is the answer I seek!

So, you must tell us which varieties you ordered... and when they arrive and subsequently bloom, you must show pictures!

Again, welcome! I hope you are prepared for what's ahead!

hi you all, I looked on receit and saw for Johnscheepers I ordered 'single flower Christmas mix' 7 for $49, I think. The other one doesn't say what I ordered, just that I ordered.
A question--all the windows (except ones upstairs) have baseboard heating under them. Do you deal with that? Houseplants dont do so well there, wonder if I set up a small table (to block the flow of heat directly upwards) would it still fry the bulbs & flowers?

I've never run into a plant that liked the hot or cold drafts from AC or heater units, and although I don't have baseboard heating, I do fight the same kind of battle with the types of units we have... I try to point the louvers down so the cold AC air and the warm, dry air from the heater unit don't blow directly across the room at the only bright window I have!

My suggestion is to try redirecting the air flow from the baseboard units... either that, or find a different window or a bank of grow lights to put the bulbs near. A table might do it, as long as you can raise the humidity in that room so the plants aren't sitting in an environment that's too dry.

Give it a try with the table... if you notice that the plants aren't doing well, move them... you could also see if a home improvement store might carry a plastic cover that redirects the air flow, such as the ones used for central air units. Other than that, I have no suggestions... but I do understand your frustration... I deal with a similar situation!
