Need watermelon germinating advice from experienced gardeners
Comments (4)The so-called seedless melons are sterile. That is why they require that a pollenizer melon also be planted so that you can get fruit. 90% chance that your seed saved from the melon is also sterile so trying to germinate is likely a waste of time and materials. Even if it should contain a fertilized embryo and so germinate the melons produced, if any, wouldn't be true but would be a cross between the seedless variety and whatever the pollenizer variety was. But if you want to give it a try, go for it and see if you get anything. Good luck. Dave...See MoreGermination advice needed
Comments (3)Molds and mildew grow where it is humid and there is no air movement. Obviously plastic bag is a goog environment for them to grow. I have never grown trees from seed but if I wanted to do it, I would soak them in water for a few days and then plant them just like any other seed, either in pot or in ground. Some seeds will germinate better if they freez and then thaw. Pines grow by themselves in the wood everywhere around here. I am talking about southern yellow pine. Conclusion: definitely your method would encourage mold and mildew growth. To be on the safe side, you may try planting in sterill soil, free of bacteria. For this purpose you can bake your potting soil in oven, or just outdoor by making a small fire on top of it. You can mix the ashes with it too. Or, if you want to spend some money, you can buy sterill poting medium....See Morenewbi, need advice on germinating Redwood
Comments (7)I grew both Sequoiadendron giganteum (Giant Sequoia) and Sequoia sempervirens (Coast Redwood) from seed last year. From what I can remember, I placed some of the seeds in the fridge ( to sow) and some just planted right away, just to see which worked better. Both had a decent success rate.. I think the Coast redwood was a little easier... The coast redwood grew very quick the first year.. but I started them around this time last year, maybe even a month earlier.. anyway, the coast redwood got to be around two feet tall by the end of the season. The giant sequoia didn't grow that fast and was only around 7 inches tall by the end of season. If you receive the seeds soon, you can start them indoors and then you can move them outside around May. I had a coast redwood that I moved indoors and out for 5 seasons and it was nice and healthy.. Basically if all goes well, you will have a 2 foot tree at the end of this season. You will have to bring it back inside around December or so.. then keep in a low light, coldest room in the house.. and wait till spring.. and repeat. The giant sequoia is a bit more hardy and can probably survive a winter after its second year of doing the indoor outdoor method.. ( this method does sometimes put a little stress on the tree, but for the most part I have alway had success doing this..) J...See MoreNeed help germinating moringa seed...
Comments (9)Moringa seeds have a short storage life; I've had seeds from both trades & commercial sources that had poor germination - or none at all. I had good germination with seeds from ECHO (a Florida-based NGO), and with the seeds in the bright green foil pouch... can't remember the brand. The latter were the seeds I used this year, had almost 90% germination, using soil-less seed starter & purified water. The pots were bottom-soaked over night after planting, then excess water poured off. A little liquid fertilizer added to the water will increase germination. I would not recommend soaking the seeds en masse, since one bad seed could infect & destroy the entire lot. That might be what happened to the first attempt mentioned in the OP. Moringa is tropical; in a temperate climate, it benefits from being grown in a warm, sheltered location. Treat it like okra, they are about equally sensitive to cool conditions. The South side of a building works well, the reflected heat & shelter from wind are both beneficial. I have also had good results using pole beans as a wind break (at least 2 rows running E-W), with a row of Moringa on the sheltered South side. In my short summers, the trees might only reach 4-5' tall... but I plant them closely (about 8" apart in the row seems optimal) and get several large pickings....See Moremugsie
