What is this on my morning glory vine?

I posted this on the vine forum and haven't had any response.

This MG glory vine is from large black seeds that I got in trade. It is supposed to be "Large flower, violet/lavender with white edges.

I've never seen a Morning Glory vine grow with what looks like "thorns" growing out of the vine stem. They are fairly firm a rigid but are not sharp like a real thorn.

Any idea if this is normal" or is this a type of morning glory that I shouldn't grow.

Probably is Brazilian MG.

honestly im going to give it a try for the first time but the way i am going to go at this project is i will cut and make clones . I have not tried it with this plant but with bougainvillea it was successful. What you do it get some type of dome , either a cloning station or just some tub wear . keep them contained!! i'd put them on a vine, that's what i do every time when i do mine, like twine or something. or else ohhhh myyyy goodness!! talla "my little one> brought me home one for mommies day, so i niavly planted it in the ground, and watched it so beautifully take over the area it was in, to this day everytime i see a beginner, i pull that baby!! i dont even let it bloom, i know what can happen to an unmanaged flower, in that particular area, it would be. errr!!! LOL however, i do plant others and put them on twine and let them grow up it,spread the length i want and prune. i'm with sinfonian, **shudder** put it on twine!!! LOL ~Medo only a little nutso!!! Sounds like a 4 footed critter is enjoying your morning glory vines. I would put my bets on a chipmunk as the culprit. In the past, I have had the same problem. What i have found is hanging windchimes around the plants at a very low level keeps the critters away. I have a collection of really cheap ones that I've gotten at dollar stores and use those. The other thing is those vines that where chewed off will be fine. You will soon find new stems branching out from where the pieces was taken off. they also like soil that isn't very fertile. I've had seedlings bloom in pure peat pots at just a few inches tall. I've had them grow to monsters before blooming. What I was told was they will gobble up the fertilizer (nitrogen) and grow until they've gotten it down then bloom. You say you haven't fertilized yours? Nature did. It comes with the rain. It could be lavender moonvine.Send me a email and I will email you a photo I found on the internet and compare the plant.

Don't think it's a brazillian one. The leaves on mine are different, heartshaped. The seeds where dark black and quite large, but no hairy anything on them. I don't have any leftover ones to take a pic of. I planted the 4 I had and only 1 germinated.

Karla, the trader said the flowers where in bloom during the day, not at night. Don't all moonvine bloom in the evening and dark?

I just don't want to plant the seedling if it could turn out to be anything like binweed or Noah, that tiny orange/red mg that reseeds everywhere for years and years. Took a friend of mine 5 years to get rid of all the seedlings that kept coming up every spring all over her yard and gardens, even in the middle of the lawn and a crack in the middle of the road.

Think I'll send the trader and e-mail and see if she can give me more info on them

Hi Fran...

I sowed moonflower vine that was labeled lavender and the sprouted seedlings are just starting to climb and also have those thorns along the lower stem.

It peaked my curiosity so I looked it up and sure enough... it has thorns! Looks like you have a moonflower instead of a morning glory, tho.

OK folks, gonna e-mail the trader and see if she can give me any more info on the seeds. Lavender moonflower vine is fine with me. Funny too, 3rd year is the charm, maybe. I've tried to germinate lavender ones 2 years in a row and got none, now maybe I have one without trying.

I've had moonflowers germinate a year and half after I planted them! Go figure. Hope it bears beautiful flowers for you.

I just planted some lavender moonflower vines, had very good germination, but something, probably DD's cat, got in them and broke up all but 2. I put the biggest one in the ground and it has really taken off. I noticed today that is has stickers on it, exactly like the ones you described. I planted the other survivor yesterday in a large container, hope it does as good as the first. I live in zone 8b, I hope they have time to set seed.
