Chinese Red Noodle Bean (Pics)

Here are my first Chinese Red Noodle Beans (bottom right). They look more purple than red, and are about a foot long. They sure are skinny. I haven't tasted them yet.

Here are tiger tom cherry tomatoes and seeds harvested from Coco Rose de Prague bush beans. The flash caused the beans to be more washed out than they really are:

I am making my first attempt at saving seeds with these tiger tom tomatoes. I've read the Gardenweb seed saving FAQs, so hopefully it works out.

How fun! I'm trying Chinese Red Noodle this year too. Yours are much further along than mine. Nice Pics!

Thanks, it's been fun watching the progression. Hopefully the plant will start producing in larger quantities soon. I imagine yours won't be too far behind, as you're just a zone behind me.

Well, I would be the first to say that yardlongs are not for everybody... but I have always enjoyed them. Perhaps because my spouse is Asian, and knows how to prepare them; and maybe because I'm a little "different". ;-) To me, variety is the spice of life, and one of the joys of gardening. So far, "Red Noodle" is my favorite yardlong for flavor (except for a red-podded variety from the Philippines that will not grow here) but it takes longer to bear, and bears less, than most of them. It does, however, thrive on heat. I will be growing 5 kinds of yardlongs this year, including trials of a new variety from Malaysia, and two from the Philippines... results will be posted in the Asian & Bean Forums later this year. The most important thing about cooking yardlongs is to do so lightly, because they overcook easily. Stir-frying is best, or par-boiling for about one minute. This brings out the best flavor. Some varieties cooked this way taste very similar to asparagus... hence one of their other names, "asparagus bean". Oh, and by the way... for those trying to attract & keep insect predators, cowpeas (including yardlongs) are very effective. Ladybugs & wasps love the nectar produced by the pads located below the flowers. There must be something good in it, yellowjackets feeding on it become as docile as honeybees.

Green beans from Chinese red noodle seeds

I'm growing unnamed long beans right now and they have dull yellowish green flowers.. I'm also growing black eyed peas which are cowpeas and are the same species of plant as long beans. The leaves and flowers are identical but the black eyed peas are a bush variety... So it would be difficult to know the variety of the first plant amongst long beans. If you dry some seed from that plant, you might get a clue on what's goin on, OR you may not. I'm a little confused with mine because my seeds are black if left to completely dry in the pod but if you pull the seeds from the dried pod early, the seeds turn out a brick red. I don't know what process is going on there. I've never grown the red variety before so I can't coment on the flower. Seed can and do get mixed up, weather it be physically or genetically. I bought some moon shadow hyacinth beans a couple of years ago and had some purple leaved variety beans mixed in. As a kid, I remember planting a white lima bean and the beans the plant produced looked like Christmas limas... So mixups can happen...

I can't wait to hear how they taste! I'm trying to pick unusual veggies, to get the kids interested. This year we're trying a purple pole bean, purple carrots, and Black Cherry tomatoes. I gave up on the purple broccoli though. It was taking up too much room, and hadn't even started to form heads by mid-July, so I ripped it out to make room for a fall lettuce crop.

Your garden is a little ahead of mine, but not too much. There are tons of little tomatoes on my plants, just nothing turning red (or yellow, or purple) yet.

Bonnie, you sound just like me :) I also love growing unique vegetables for the kids (including me) to enjoy. I was interested primarily in winter sowing veggies, and then ended up getting interested in flowers as well. I grew purple pod bush beans and purple carrots last year! You'll have to let me know how the purple pole beans do, and whether they stay purple or turn green when cooked like mine did. The bush beans didn't yield as well as I would have liked. I am also anxious to see my yellow, purple, and white tomatoes begin to to turn colors. I've had only one red and a couple tiger toms ripen so far. I had a couple yellow pear toms starting to ripen, but my dogs got to them first.

I cooked up the Chinese Red Noodle beans in a stir fry last night with some zucchini. I didn't have many beans, but enough to have a taste. I tasted a bite raw, and they were kind of bitter. Stir fried, they were firm textured and mild, kind of a cross between asparagus and green beans. Cooked, the color seemed to darken to to purple/black. My kids ate them, and seemed to like them.

Please post pictures of your vegetables as they begin to mature. I love seeing what other people are doing, and getting some new ideas.
