Where can I buy Vivax or Moso near Coumbia, SC?

I live in Columbia, SC and would like to see some Vivax or Moso before buying it. Can anyone point me to a source near me? If not -who can give me a good deal on one of these? Thanks sooo much for your help!

I'm sure there are nurseries around you that sell bamboo, but I checked the listings of American Bamboo Society member nurseries, and there were none for SC, although there are a number in bordering states. I've attached a link so you can look at these. You might also take a look at bambooplantation.com, a mailorder bamboo nursery which is in Mississippi. I've never ordered from them, but have heard they have a decent reputation.

One last thing. Vivax is very thin-walled, so, if you live in an area which ever gets snow, you could get breakage. A better choice in timber bamboos than vivax (and prettier in my opinion) is Ph. nigra 'Henon.'

There are many groves of Moso in SC that you can go and dig for free. Best done in February though. Troll the web and you will find some locations...

There is a grove in downtown Aiken, but it has lots of no trespassing signs. There is also supposed to be a really impressive stand in Edgefield although I have not seen it.

I believe if you attend the Anderson cleanup they will let you dig this clone and get a start. It is SLOW to size up though, at least ten years. Given time in SC's climate, it is spectacular!

Henon will size up faster.

Large Bamboo for Buffalo, NY?

Hi, I'm in Rochester, only about 50 minutes away from Buffalo and I've had success with most of my timber bamboos however I'm close enough to the bay/lake so that it almost never dips below 0F so it might be the same for you. I've had success with henon, parvifolia, dulcis, atrovaginata, rubromarginata, yellow groove and even moso although I cover that one up. It is definitely possible to grow timber bamboos around here. If you are really that close to where I live, I don't even mind if you drive over here. Most of my bamboos are not that well established yet, but my email is lau1922@yahoo.com if you need some local bamboo.

I have quite a bit of space. It is very rural here. It was all just bare sand surrounded by woods and I have been working hard for 3 yrs on planting things. Figuring out what works and what doesn't. The unseasonably warm weather followed by a prolonged cold snap damaged my crepe myrtles, saucer magnolia, roses and even my carolina jasmine. My clematis, on the other hand seems fine. I suspect there are other things damaged that I just haven't discovered yet- I wonder if the buds on my azaleas survived... I expect most of my plants to survive, but maybe not bloom at all this spring. Not much time to do anything outside, going camping this wkend. Hope my cousin can keep things watered and cats fed. I am a sucker for garden mags- anything beautiful. I can't imagine living in the city, but then I grew up in the country. Sorry for running on- it has been a very busy month and I expect it to stay that way at work, at the same time I am trying to plant spring plants, garden, etc. I am a bit stressed... So much to do, so little time to do it in! Well,I am going to figure on getting the clumping kind. I still have not figured out where I want it exactly (concerned about planting too near the septic lines- idiots put them all across the back yard!), but I will figure it out. Clumping bamboo sounds like a great, low-maintenance plant, gorgeous and useful. Glad to hear yours survived the cold weather. Brandy

Just thought I could add some data to the Thamnocalamus. Tess. file. I planted several of these (1#) a little over a year ago in the ground. Last winter extreme low temps were approx. 15 F with the addition of wind. Lost all leaves, all small culms/whipshoots, and top 50% of larger culms (on the strongest plants). Also lost rhizomes (total death) on one of the plants which was battling termites. Summer temps are typically 90~95 F daytime and 68~74 F at night, humidity 60~90%. All plants suffered (?) from some leaf drop late in the summer but nothing severe. Several of the plants shot higher culms than last year while the remaining plants merely replenished what they had lost above ground. They get 6~8 hours direct sun in AM, almost full shade in the PM (during the warm months). My current observations suggest that the summer heat (especially nighttime) isn't having a negative impact on their growth rate (meaning they are increasing in size and strength). Three of the plants also had stunted culms due to spring warmth followed by an extended cold snap which stopped them dead in their tracks. Can I sell these as a dwarf variety on ebay :) Check out the gallery for some pics. BTW, I'm usually a lurker here and recently got hooked on the boo. Thanks to everyone here who has contributed to my knowledge base, hopefully I can contribute some useful info in the future.

Digging bamboo for free is a great idea, if you:

1. Can do it legally;
2. Know what you are doing (or have friends who know how) and have the right tools, because digging up timber bamboo is not easy; and
3. Know that the bamboo is healthy (large groves often have bamboo mite infections)

I got my moso from a guy on here in Lugoff SC (Thanks Gene) As far as slow to size up. YES I have had mine for a think 2 years now and it's not doing anything more than surviving. It put up 2 tiny pencil thin shoots this year. However it looks healthy and hopefully someday it will become something impressive.

Hey I live in Anderson, SC not far from the moso grove. I was planning on digging one more up that is in an area of the grove that they dont do yearly cleanups on. They told me I could have all I wanted from that area because the shoots try to come up in the graves. Message me if you would be interested in meeting me one day and maybe we could help each other load these things up. I dug a 2 inch diameter culm last time and plan on digging a 3 incher this time. It takes most of the day to load one that big but if you get enough root ball it will take off and flourish.
