Need help ID'ing this banana plant :)

Hi all-
I just moved into a new house with a couple of banana plants in the back. 2 weeks ago I noticed it started producing bananas. I'd like to take care of it properly, but it sounds like I might need to ID which type it is first. I live in Miami, FL in case that helps!

Thanks for the collective brain power.

(Any suggestions on signs of hand's maturity would be helpful. Right now the top-most hand has fingers that are about 6-7in long and are the width of a garden hose)

A better description of the plant would help more than anything I believe!
How tall is the trunk?
They look short and squat with big leaves to me, is that accurate?
What about color?
All green all over?
I think I might see red on the trunk, peel down an old leaf or two and look at a fresh unwithed leaf, trunk color tells alot.
I don't see any pups, not good for the future if so...

I'm not good at IDing bananas yet, I'm pretty new to them really, but the devil is in the details...

Tought to tell at that size. Might be a Cavendish variety. Could even be one names "Valery", which is a pretty good performer, for a short banana. See http://webebananas.com/bvar-T-Z.html

Wow, that was a quick reply! Looks like it may be Smilax ecirrhata, it is native to Michigan. Thanks jaynine for your help. This quote might explain why it disappeared: "Populations of this plant are threatened by the overpopulation of White-tailed Deer", from http://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/woodland/plants/up_carrionflw.html - there are lots of deer in this nature center. Oh, and Selaginella isn't really a climbing plant, it's more of a spreading plant. It's good for hanging baskets and mixed planters - likes moist shade. I've used it sparingly in terrariums, but it can spread quite rapidly so needs some maintenance.
