Looks like a peanut plant to me. Have you been feeding the squirrels again?

    Could it be baptista?

I'm guessing something from the pea family - which could be any number of things...

Don't pull it! We grew this once when our kids were little and they LOVED digging the peanuts and seeing how they grew under ground. If you don't have little ones, try to invite some over for the harvest!

My parents grew some when I was a kid in northwestern maine, It was more of a novelty than any sort of production from my memory, like a couple dozen peanuts at most.

I thought I planted out the one sprout of something... but PEANUT? How the heck... ? I would imagine it would have to be growing from a fresh not roasted peanut... where would it have come from? How could it have gotten in my container?

Good Lord, this gardening thing can be confusing....

What else could it be? I did notice that the leaves fold up at night...

Peanuts? I thought they'd only grow in the south???

Oh boy, now tell me about cashews...

I grew my plants on a lark, just to see if I oculd. While not exactly a cash crop, I got about 3-4 peanuts the year that I grew them. It's a pretty plant with a nice yellow flower, though ...

    Karen -

Before my son was born, I worked as an office manager for an import/export company in New York - Cashews are grown in India and Africa. I used to come home with bags and bags of Cashews. We made cashew chicken till it came out of our ears! This was quite a while ago - but I am assuming that those are still the two main countries where they are grown.

Most of the time, the cashews had to be roasted at home. No salt, but very tasty and free!

At Christmas time, aside from our bonus, we would all get gigantic bags of pistachios and more cashews...

Today, it's hard for my husband and I to buy cashew nuts - when we used to get them free! :0)

Oh my, I haven't heard that song in about 55 years, LOL. We used to sing it while swinging on the swings in my yard when I was a kid.

    Hey I remember that song!!

Funny you are growing peanuts and did not know it.

I once yanked what I thought was a weed in my garden (where the previous year I threw veggies scraps) and out came a bunch of those little red potatoes. I had tons of them underground in my veggie patch. I felt a little stupid for pulling them early but they were yummy.

You're right Karen, it sure is funny! I guess we can call this my first seed trade! I know that little bugger had quite a snack on what I had on my patio!! There have been holes dug in anything that was big enough for him to get his grimy little paws into!

Why the heck is that hawk hanging out at the pool, when he could be having a feast on the tree rats hanging out on my patio?

  • karendee

Too bad you cannot train the hawk to take care of them! I am lucky not to have the tree rats.

I have to admit I kind of want to grow a peanut plant now. it looks neat...
