Pelargoniums true from seed?

I started some Horizon Scarlet geraniums last year and they bloomed all summer without ever producing a single seedpod that actually had seeds.

So, today I was moving the window boxes they were in and noticed tons of geraniums seedlings! I guess in late fall they produced some seeds and now due to the heavy rains we got they all sprouted at the same time.

I'll keep them to see what they look like, but has anyone ever tried this before? Will they come true?

These are the only seeds my 84 year old maman has ever winter sowed. She took seeds from reds - unknown name - and surprisingly came up with mostly reds but also a couple of oranges which were stunning.

I'm pretty sure they cross pollinate. Where there any other kinds close by? Or maybe it's like humans and you can sometimes get something that looks like a grandparent!

They are perennial here but do better in the North-at least at my inlaw's garden in W. Virginia. I have Geranium macrorhizum, which is perennial for me and a really tough ground cover for shade. It doesn't flower for very long. I have also grown Rozanne in part shade as a perennial for about four years but I lost it in the drought last year. I sow mine the Deno method. Place the seeds on to kitchen paper towel, moisten, fold and place in an airing cupboard. After 3 days check daily for germination. Once the root is clearly visable pot them into 4 inch pots containing 50/50 top soil and grit. I dont know if they germinate as soon as they are ripe

What you need is someone who understands this much better than I do, but I figured I should post the links to help you or the expert who might happen along. Best of luck! But in any case, if it's really PVP, then the variety must be open-pollinated rather than hybrid. Salvia cultivars that come true/nearly true from seed?

Christin, FWIW I have grown Salvia 'Rose Sensation' from seed and it comes true. Have also grown Salvia 'Caradonna' from seed, but most of my plants didn't have the dark stems that differentiates it from other cultivars. It did have the nice dark flowers. regards,seedmoney

I did gather some seed last year. It is hard to catch they spring them off so quickly once they are ready. They haven't bloomed yet but I can't wait to see what happens. The ones I gathered from were speckled.

I had lots of red geraniums and also a white one, but this one was grown from cuttings and never develops seed pods. I guess the only way to really know is wait for flowers. It's really cold here so I don't expect much growth for the next months, but once they flower I'll post pics.
