Any Zone 5ers or 6ers peek at protected Musa Basjoos yet?
Comments (70)"Where and how much did you order your basjoo, if you don't mind me asking?" Sorry, I'm just catching up! I ordered mine on Ebay. This is my second time ordering and I think I generally pay around $5-6 a plant. I received them already and they look great, so I have four in the ground at this point (three new and one I had as a houseplant). Blondboy, I'm so happy for you!!!! What a sight!!! I guess I was the only one who actually killed mine. :( But as a Zone 5er (and borderline 5 at that), I'm not all that surprised. I WILL try again this coming winter though, maybe even with Christmas lights for a little warmth! I did a few things wrong this winter like having plastic directly on the plant!...See MoreFirst go at Musa Basjoo
Comments (8)I also am a first time musa basjoo planter and yours look fantastic! I don't know what I am doing wrong, but what do you fertilize with and how often? Also how often are you watering? I had a some problems with spider mites and aphids. I never seen the aphids, but had ants covering the base and I read if you see ants, you have aphids because they leave a sticky sweet residue and attract the ants. So, I would love some insight. It has been very hot and humid here, so maybe not enough water. I am lost. Also, do you cut off the leaves that get brown on edges? Looks like they were sunburnt. Any help would be appreciated! Comments (11)My musa basjoo grew to about 4 feet the first year, from a seedling in spring. I think that bananas in general grow quicker planted directly in the ground than in a pot (providing you have good soil). I basically put composted manure in the soil and then used miracle grow during the season. As I wouldn't have a chance overwintering mine outdoors, I dug out of the ground, potted, and kept in a bright window for the winter. Full sun is best but my window was a north window with not much sun. Anyways, I watered pretty sparingly (as the plant wasn't active in growth) and didn't fertilized, and sprayed every once in a while with neem oil and water (as a precaution against bugs). So now they are back outside planted in a flower bed. The only bad thing is when they adjust back to outside, the leaves it grew indoors pretty well get tattered in the wind, sun burnt and eventually yellow and die, but the new leaves it gets once it's used to full sun are stronger and nicer looking. Comments (13)Yes, that was a tiny pot, it happens all too often at bigger stores I'm afraid. The temps in my closed off un-heated room will probably approach 40 degrees F most of the time. I might try to get it even colder by opening a window or something. I don't think its a good thing for it to come out of dormancy in Winter. That room has a busted window anyhow. I don't think the splotches are normal. I'm not sure how they got them, but I'd guess its the wrong amount of watering or some other kind of neglect along the way. I'm just hoping their Basjoos, if their not, I may end up with dead plants, and looming refunds. I agree, not only are they care-less with labels, their care-less with the care of the plants. I've watched them year after year, they let many plants just die if they don't sell. Also, those are click-able thumbnail pics up there, one don't have to strain their eyes on those little pics.
