11-month-old seedlings have babies!

These seedlings are from the seeds Cindee and Elizabeth sent me last June. I have planted three of them in individual pots, the rest are in the garden bed. Now, two of the seedlings in pots are having babies! The one photographed is having 4 babies, the other one has 3! Is this normal or strange? Does that mean the seedlings are mature enough and that I can expect blooms sooner? The 'mother' bulb is about the size of your toe.

One more thing, it looks like I'm having 2 or 3 germinations from the seeds I thought were cooked! Hope that more will come in the end!

Great news Xuan!! I just plunked some seeds from Cindee in water tonight with hopes that they will be ok. They seemed awful dry and flat (I imagine they may have been smooshed at the post office). I sent Cindee Popov seeds and tried to build a crush proof mailer! Cindee...you'll have to let me know how it worked. I've done a lot of selfing of Black Pearl, Rilona, and Picotee. Also, some crosses with Nymph (which apparently you either love or hate!).

May have seeds to offer when I know what took. Planted Vittatum seeds from a neighbor's plant (a block away) today.

Ferrari and Exotica should bloom this week. We are due rain all week. Ice Queen is sending up a scape and the previously deemed "dud" Hercules also has a scape peaking out. WHOO HOO!!

Just checked the newly sprouted seeds: 1 Candyfloss x Happiness and 1 Pamela x self. Only 2 germinated. Will have to watch these closely. Maybe I should pot them up in individual pots soon to protect them from snails.

Oh, Cindee, please don't send any seeds this time. I guess I will have enough from Jodi and Maria. You're too busy to be bothered. Thank you.

Aster, dahlia, sweet pea, mini snapdragon, lobelia, sunflower, Poppy, larkspur, impatien, and viola. Dahlia, sunflower, and probably aster larkspur and snapdragons would prefer more sun. They look very healthy and green but are all so small. So many things can "go wrong" when growing in containers. I have a bedroom window facing SW. Can i overwinter these in the window and hope for early blooms next spring? Are you saying these are all outside now with NE exposure and you'd like to bring them inside when it gets colder? It's hard to advise without knowing your zone. I think some of them would be fine left outside. The sunflowers, sweet peas, and larkspur can't live any longer no matter where you put them. As true annuals, they're already senior citizens. I think the rest are tender perennials. What kind of lobelia? All the other older plants also have great foliage and no blooms except for cosnos thats just started flowers last week. If it's been cold, wet, and overcast, the plants may just not have had the light they need to produce flowers. Do the pots have drain holes? Do the pots have saucers? Are they full of water? What am i doing wrong and will they last til next year? It sounds to me like a combination of too much water, too little sun, possibly a soil issue. What else can you tell about the soil? They have plenty root space. If the plants do not like the soil, the roots will go to the edge of the pot, down, then around and around, strangling themselves. I sowed these expecting many cheerful flowers but i only have very green small ones. You may get more enjoyment out of foliage plants if you are in the same situation next year. Should i restart after winter Absolutely! or take cuttings, I think only the impatiens from your list would be good candidates for this. or cont to feed, or pray for the sun? I would stop fertilizing unless/until you see some growth. It doesn't sound like it's helping, just wasting the fert. Has this happened to you with the seedlings and did they eventually grow up? Usually not, unfortunately. Once a plant gets stunted or unhealthy for whatever reason, it's hard to rescue them in a container situation (not including house plants in this remark.)

Hi there, the roots look as if they've been kind of 'cut short' so yes, maybe they are indeed root mealies as suggested above. I'm not familiar with them (thank goodness!) but I'm sure Laura's treatment will work if that's what you have. I personally still think the pot is too large (maybe I'm an underpotter!) as the pot will hold a great deal of compost without any roots to draw out some of the water held in it. Until the plant recovers and grows a more extensive/healthy root system that's able to almost fill the pot, I would go for a smaller one...hoping someone else will chime in with their thoughts on this bit. Now you have shown the later pic, I think I can see what has also possibly happened....The 2 pics seem to have very different mixes in them....the mix in your first pic looks ideal, very open and free draining with big chunky bits. I read you have added cactus mix, in what proportion? Now look at the later pic where the top bit has been removed and the mix is a lot finer, it looks rather wetter too as each time you water the cactus mix has got washed down and now sits in the lower levels and around what roots the plant has. The top layer drains well so always appears dry so maybe you thought it needed watering, but the lower levels were still wet as they held the more water retentive cactus mix and that could have rotted the roots off. I think it could be a problem of three parts. #1 root mealy bugs...if that's what the white dots are #2 too large a pot with lots of un-occupied compost #3 overwatering a gritty mix that's got a bit too much added cactus formula. I would let it dry out a bit and then re-pot.....in a smaller pot if it were mine :) hoping to see some others opinions though. Gill UK

More pics will come if successful, Marie. That you can count on. I need to do an updated pic of the graft I did onto a cut off root a while back. It's still doing very well and it's interesting to see how the graft point is changing. Thanks, Otis. These were my first seedlings to germinate and experiment with. I'd trimmed the tap root on their first repotting. When they were about 3 months old I pinched the tops off and they burst out in several branchings. Thanks, Ahmed. All I did was cut the large root off that had some rot, then decided to take the other seedling, cut off one of it's large roots and join them together. My thinking is that all layers of both plants would be joined much like doing a regular grafting on top. I then wrapped it in Parafilm Grafting Tape. I haven't replanted in soil as of yet. I did place it in a plastic container to keep it dry but perhaps keep in the humidity like how people bag the grafts of branches. I'll be keeping a close eye on it. I may only leave it in there for a few short days. I was debating just letting it lay on a shelf or hang it. Fingers crossed all turns out well. Kirk

I always use the video sized boxes from the USPS when sending any seeds or anything live... they are only about $4.90 for Flat Rate Priority Mail, all you can stuff into the box... and those boxes are free. The USPS runs all regular envelopes through large machinery to cancel postage, and I always worry about things getting crushed. I feel that it's worth the extra few dollars for safety's sake, and for the Delivery Confirmation.

Don't worry, Xuan... I have plenty of seeds with your name on them! I couldn't possibly use all that I have, and I anticipate lots more seeds next year from all my bulbs!

Kristi - you're so lucky to still have flowers blooming... mine were all done a while ago... and although it's a bit depressing, I know that next year I'll have lots more! Hippeastrums grow in a very wonderful cycle... anticipating their blooms is almost half the fun!

The disposition of forming numerous offsets and formning them in an early stage of development, respectively - that is a genetic property. However, production of offsets is somewhat enhanced under particularly good husbandry on the plants.

However, a conspicuous production of daughter bulbs does not indicate that the initiation of flowerscapes is soon to be expected. On the other hand, numerous offsets do not exhaust the bulb and effectuate disadvantages to the central bulb.

Excuse my poor language skills but I wish to reconfirm. Do you mean "On the other hand, numerous offsets DO NOT exhaust the bulb and (DO NOT?) effectuate disadvantages to the central bulb"?
I was worrying that producing offsets too soon DOES exhaust the central bulb and eventually DOES prolong time before bloom.

Congratulations! My focus has been on bulbs that will do exactly as you say your baby is doing. I wish to have multiplying 'onions', only in this case they are hippeastrum.

Unfortunately, I did not record what I sent you. I simply sent you some of this and some of that, and labeled accordingly.

It would not surprise me that some of my seeds would heavily produce babies like you describe. I tend to make those crosses when I can.

My one and two year Johnsonii crosses are doing just as you describe. I did not sow any of the Voodoo or Supreme Garden crosses. I gave those all away, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did the same as you describe.

I think that what Hans-Werner is saying is that the numerous pups will not slow down the advent of blooms, but I will let him answer for himself.

In the meantime, when these bulbs are two years old, in your climate, I would plant them in the ground. They should bloom better in the ground as opposed to a pot under light!

I am so thrilled that you are actually growing some of my seeds.

Oh, Ann... I had better luck with yours and Cindee's seeds last year when I started them in N.California before going home to Vietnam; I almost had 100% germination. The problem with me is that I misplaced the labels when packing them... so now I don't know which is which! I hope when the plants bloom then I can seek your help to identify them.

Even tho these are in pots, I leave the pots outside. I'm very lucky that I don't have to grow anything under light, not even my AVs! In my observation, the ones in pots grow faster than those in the garden bed! Maybe because they don't have to compete with other plants for food!

Congrats, Xuan!! So glad to see the first batches of seeds producing for you. I have a number of seedlings that cluster like that. I leave them alone or if too large will share with others. Lora's "Lil Pinkie" and Raydio's Striatum "Miss Ethel" also produce many babies. That sure did not stop Miss Ethel from sending up 3 scapes for me this year, even though the mother bulb is smallish and she has a bunch of offspring.
