buddah belly ,noobie question

I bought myself some seeds of this bamboo. The instructions said that to get the bulbous look it had to be planted in poor soil. I put the plants in normal plant medium for now but when they start to develop bigger stems will I have to re-pot them in poor ground? And what is a good medium to plant them in? Can I use peat and maybe sphagnum to pot them in(can't get much poorer than that) and do I need to water much or will I get better belly bulbs when I keep them relativly dry?
I never thought that growing grass could be so hard.
