Choosing a location for my hive

Hello,

I'm new to beekeeping, and I intend to start a new hive this spring. So I've got a few questions.

I'm stuck in the city, and I have a very small yard. My best place to put my hive is between my shed and my fence, where it will get probably zero sunlight. will this work?

Another worry I have is my chicken waterer. I don't want my bees to get into the habit of drinking out of my chicken water, I think my hens will have something to say about it. what can I do to stop this? My idea was to put a small water garden or a bird bath nearby.

When do I need to order my bees? do I need to get it done in January, or can it wait until later? I'm going to go with a package, I can hardly afford that let alone a nuc.

Hey Speedfreakian,

Do you have a bee keeping friend/mentor nearby? It would work best for someone to actually help you look things over regarding where to put the bees. I've seen them kept in shade, in my native NJ. It worked. But they were less docile. I believe it could also cut down on your harvest, as they'll be later in going to work each day.

You can try putting out an alternate waterer for them. A dripping faucet often catches their attention. I have poultry and other animals and have to put something to float in each bucket, so they can climb out whenever they fall in. It doesn't bother my chickens at all.

I'd order your bees as soon as you can. What part of the country do you live in? Here in Oklahoma we try to have them delivered in April. It's best to order early as they do sell out.

Thanks, this is helpful. I live in Albuquerque, NM, zone 7a. I can't say that I know anybody else here in Albuquerque that has bees, but I know we have a beekeeping group or two. So, I do think I'll go join one of them, just haven't gotten to it yet. I just happened to be at a city council meeting last summer when all of the beekeepers were there, and the council declared ABQ a "bee friendly city" That's what sparked this idea.
I suppose I may be able to put the hive in the front yard, but it would be in the blazing hot sun in the summer, it can get to a hundred degrees here easily. Also it would be highly visible in a somewhat rough neighborhood, and right next to an elementary school. though it would be the required 50 feet away, I don't think the crabby parents would be too happy. What do you think? I'm juts trying to decide if it's actually practical to do this at my house, or if i need to put it at my parents house 2 hours away. I really want the local honey from the city, as it will be a great help to my allergies.

If you are on a budget and you decide to go with langstroth hives, try going foundationless. I have langstroth hives and I have never used foundation. Not buying foundation saves me money. That frees up more money for purchasing more hives and more bees. I use the "wedge" frames. I remove the wedge from the top bar and turn it 90 degrees and staple it back on with a 1/4" crown air stapler. I use 5/8" long staples for the wedge and 1" long staples to assemble the rest of the frame. This gives the bees a guide to build their comb on. Otherwise, who knows where they will start to build it? Another thing that might save you money is to catch swarms. You might be able to get on a call list for swarm removal. Check with local law enforcement in your area or agricultural extension agencies. You might also catch swarms with bait hives, often called swarm traps. You can build your own or buy the manufactured wood pulp ones that look like a large flower pot. Mann Lake has the cheapest ones and they are impregnated with asphalt to hold out to the weather a little longer. A bee pheromone lure or lemongrass oil should be used to attract scout bees looking to relocate the swarm. I tried this last year a little late in the swarm season, but did manage to get a swarm to move in a wood pulp bait hive on the last day of June. This year I will get them out in late April. Our main swarm season in Nebraska is May, but it can start in late April and go through June, depending on conditions.

Joannedisfan - i'll give you my opinions. I would go with your first choice. Many veggies can't get enough of the sun - for example, cowpeas, okra, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, etc. Others would like to receive less sun, and this can be achieved by shading them with taller plants around them, or even a tarp of some kind. Having too much sun exposure is a problem that most people would love to have. It can always be dealt with. It's when you don't get enough direct sunlight, that it becomes a problem that you have to live with.You just have to make sure the plants receive enough water. I ran into that problem this year with my new box - and although 95% of my garden is thriving, judging from the physical appearance of some of the plants - I should have increased watering once July got here. If I were concerned with the area being saturated with water most of the time, I would lay the box on top of a bed of gravel, say....4" to 6" tall. That way, the ground could still be like a swamp, but wouldn't affect your garden in any way. EG

i think the main reason many berries like partial shade, is more because of the shade keeping it nice and wet, rather than not liking full sun. if they could get nearly full time sun and manage to keep nice and and wet and cooler by the roots, they would be happy, but thats hard to do unless you have a nice irrigation set up. but yeah i am in a hot dry climate (at least in summer) in the mountains here, all of my berries are in part shade...plus i do very dense polycultures, basically plant a lot of diverse stuff really way too close together (for most people ideas of proper spacing). and i have living mulches, for chop and drop, and just for keeping the ground covered, as opposed to having it all open and exposed, where you get all the water to burn off quickly... planting everything smooshed together like that does have the advantage of shading the soil, keeping it moist...the raspberries in particular, establish and then shade out themselves...which works out good...cause it keeps the roots cooler, the moisture doesnt evaporate quickly, and then they can stretch up and every which way to get their leaves into spots of full sun. but i also experience them growing like weeds...so i would think the best idea is to think of a spot where the prolific growth is ok and suited to that spot, like the edge of a fence or somewhere you want a type of privacy screen, or somewhere where they can really take off and not be annoying...spreading in to other cultivated areas... and the blueberry is very particular, so i would plant those off in their own area, and use acidic soil, they are fussy about that. duff from under conifirs works out good to make a raised blueberry bed. they are also the most fussy about needing constant watering...

I would most definitely try to keep them out of sight. Perhaps, in your climate, the shade might be alright. By all means contact one of those beekeeping groups. They won't steer you wrong.
