Found myself in this forum when poking around in pickling cucumbers. Didn't realize I ended up in Asian vegetable forum. My apologies to anyone who might get annoyed for seeing a post here regarding a wonderful cucumber variety I am growing this year. Got the seeds from Totally Tomatoes (primarily sells heirloom variety tomato seeds). It is a French cornichon type that's burpless and seedless. Highly productive vine sets perfect fruits early without cross pollination. It even seemed like the fruits set before the flowers opened! Fruits are sweet, firm, and crunchy. Best harvested when they are about 4-5" long. Diameters are about 1 to 2 inches. (2-3" if I don't pick soon enough.) My only grievance is that the smooth skin is covered with extremely sharp needle-like spines. Holding one is like holding a spiny cactus! Great in salads, great in pickling! The variety is called "Cool Breeze". We got seeds into ground late this year, but with only four plants, we've harvested enough to eat some, discarded some too large for eating (but great for the have-a-heart trap and controlling slugs), to pickle a batch (~20 cukes), and I just harvested 30 more to combine with the 8 picked earlier to use for the next batch of pickles! Trying to decide which kind to make next. Probably more LLSPC's and maybe save some for a couple of quick pickle recipes. There's still more fruit on the vine! In comparison, the Kirby cukes that were planted at the same time are just starting to produce fruit ready for harvesting, but we only had two and there is maybe 1 or 2 nearly ready, and a only handful of newly set fruit. They are beauties though. If I get enough, I'll probably make some dills or half sours. I'll save the Straight 8's for salads, but have only seen a single fruit set on the vine and it's far from ready for harvesting. I highly recommend this cucumber variety. Maybe you could try it and not have the worm problems you were seeing with the ones you were growing.

Linda, Thank you for asking. Yes, I confess. I love cannas. In my climate, there are only a few people I know that can leave them in the ground year round and I consider them magicians with microclimates. The rest of us must store them over winter somehow. I prefer not to dig mostly out of laziness. You are exactly right about the bubble pack and brown paper. Brown paper for darkness and bubble pack to provide some insulation since my garage is not heated. Once they all green up, I will pull out all the brown dead leaves from last year and clean them up. In late May, they will be able to stay outside all day. For now, the canna trolley it is. I also gave them some kelp water about every 3rd water. And this year, I gave them a sprinkle of milorganite because I read that it can give you huge cannas. I don't know all the variety names that I have. I never really kept track. I do know that I have Bengal Tiger which I bought last year and a yellow one called Harvest Yellow. I actually found that out by posting on this forum which was so fun! I have a red one, a hot pink one, and I have a dwarf variety as well. The pots are pretty full and I should probably divide. I did divide the yellow one last fall so I'm waiting to see how that turned out before dividing others. I don't have the best pictures of mine, but promise to try to get better photos this year. plllog- I'm strict with the amount of the fructose portion of "sugars" due to Fructose Malabsorption (aka fructan intolerance) and the list of foods I need to limit or avoid. As much as 30% of the population are deficient (to some degree) in fructose receptors and don't even realize they may have a problem. This has nothing to do with the "anti-fructose or high-fructose corn syrup" issues popular in the last few years. Fructose Malabsorption can be the cause of mild to severe GI issues. It can be hereditary, but more often it develops as we age. Your physician can perform a hydrogen and methane breath test in his office to determine whether you have this condition. With all sugars, the glucose portion is used for energy in your body - it's used by your muscles. I don't have a problem with that kind of "sugar". I can consume dextrose, corn syrup, and other sweeteners/sugars/syrups as long as they are low in fructose . I just don't use a lot of ANY of them as a general practice because high-sugar diets are basically --- deadly. But, this may be what you are missing, and I didn't make it clear, the fructose portion of a sugar goes to the liver to be processed, and that's where the problem with fructose/fructans begins. I need to avoid the fructose/fructans for this reason since having my gallbladder removed, which means your only "filter" remaining is your liver - so be kind to it and avoid fructose/fructans - PLUS the GI issues from the malabsorption issue (double trouble). But long before that, we have avoided high-glycemic foods AND sugars due to diabetes in hubby's family as a way to hopefully avoid diabetes. Two of his siblings died due to diabetes-related issues (age 55 and 66), and another is seriously ill and disabled due to diabetes (age 59) and another sibling is also a longtime diabetic (age 74), and another one has blood glucose issues, but not diabetes (65). That leaves one sister, one brother, and my husband, out of 8, who don't have diabetes. So we are dealing with several different issues, not one, and that may be where the confusion comes from. The original photo that was posted (before the ones above were substituted) was the same shot that had been presented by someone in the past, asking about the id of the same plants. I could not find that thread, but if I recall correctly, the final consensus was that it was probably heliconia.
