Yeah!!! I'm still waiting, mine are green and little, but everytime I pinch back basil I think "Sigh, soon enough, soon enough" I hope to catch up soon.

à¹à¸µYum. Mine are still green. But I picked 2 zucchinis already and plenty of beans and greens. :-)

I got a late start with zucchini so I won't have any table ready for a few weeks (if ever, based on past years' results). I'm a chronic zucchini failure. I do have some leaf lettuce that's just about ready so maybe I'll actually get to eat a salad from both tomatoes & lettuce I grew myself from seed. Wouldn't THAT be a HOOT!?!
All my veggies are grown in containers, not because I don't have the space but because that space isn't prepared for growing vegetables. It annoys me because when I was a kid growing up here, we always had a huge vegetable garden plus raspberry & blueberry bushes. The BB are still here but the rest was turned over to flowers & lawn 20 years ago. I'm gradually reducing the amount of lawn while increasing the amount of flowerbeds. Meanwhile I grow tomatoes, zucchini & lettuce, cannas, dahlias, lilies & caladium in containers. Looks a bit cluttered but given my available hours for gardening it works just at present. My parents & brother before me did what they wanted with this little green acre. Now it's my turn to make it look like the picture in my head.

There's nothing like that first homegrown tomato of the season.

Lucky you. Had my first as well tonight -- a cherry-type called Red Alert. Very tough skins. Not all that impressed with it. Hope yours was much nicer.

You really can't grow zucchini? I stopped planting it because it gets so big and there's always way too much of it. Then again, I can't seem to make broccoli or cauliflower thrive.

This year my tomato plants stopped growing at about 3 inches... no idea why, and I'm MAD!!!

Picked 11 grape toms today! Waiting for the beefsteak ones.
Glad to hear I am not the only one who can't grow zucchini. Others talk about being overwhelmed with one plant and with 2 plants so far have 4. My biggest year was 7 with 2 plants, and I love zucchini.

Oh no, Leisa! I'm SO sorry to read about your tomato plants. I think I just had beginner's luck this year to get so many gorgeous plants from the seeds I either started indoors or WS. The two plants that are 6 ft. tall were started indoors; all the others were WS and I was impressed with the germination rate. I gave away a dozen plants to friends and neighbors as well as to the migrant workers who've been doing work here on weekends. Even so I still have a dozen plants, half grape tomato and the rest Stupice which is a small tomato that Diane Linsley (Diane's Flower Seeds) recommended for its flavor + short DTM. Those plants are also heavy with plump green tomatoes.

Alas, I can grow zucchini PLANTS but generally only get flowers that fall off and never become squash. My neighbor is a beekeeper so I don't think pollination is at fault. As further proof of my incompetence, they let me plant my zucchini plants in their HUGE vegetable garden the last two seasons, which is right near the beehives. I got MAYBE two zucchini. One squash developed, grew about 4 inches and stopped. Even they couldn't believe their eyes. Maybe I should start the seeds in gravel instead of potting mix. My mother told me years ago I pampered them too much.

Lucky for me a woman at work has a community garden that produces more zucchini than she can use or give away so as of now I have a reliable source of zukes the rest of the season even if I fail (again) to grow my own. They say play to your strengths and I seem to have a knack for lettuce & tomatoes. Could be worse.

Terrene Leisa have you by any chance used any straw for mulch? There have been reports of straw/hay that has been contaminated by certain very persistent kind of herbicides that either kill or retard plants, if used as mulch. (Those herbicides are more tightly controlled now.)

I am green with envy on all fronts..I was so busy w/ the platn sale and then preoccupied by my granddad's passing I did not plant out my veggies until late june. All I have managed to harvest so far is basil,cilantro,sage,parsley..its nice but I am d-y-i-n-g for those toms and such to GROW>

Terrene, nope, I haven't used any straw. I think it is a combination of keeping them in their little cups for too long, and a seriously abnormal hotter than hades heat wave that went through!

gardenweed, I'm on my THIRD batch of zuchini plants...I can't keep them alive... lol. I have gotten some good patty pans this year, though. First time trying! :)

Leisa - thanks for the mention of patty pans. They're just as good & easy to prepare as zucchini; maybe I should give those a try and give up on zukes. Like I said, play to your strengths and if mine involve lettuce & tomatoes as well as perennials, I'm not going to waste time & potting soil on anything that doesn't grow, thrive and reward me for my effort & expense. If I can't grow zucchini in full sun & good garden dirt, then the heck with them! When I want zucchini I'll just support Meadowbrook Farm a couple miles up the road. Who knows? Maybe they'll sell some of my extra tomatoes!
