Containers for starting seeds outside

What kind of container is recommended for starting seeds outside?

In the past, I have started seeds indoors in tiny seed cells. While this works well, I have only a limited amount of indoor space.

I was hoping for a year without seeds. However, if that is not to be and I do not have the heart to cut off a developing pod, I would be interested in staring the seeds outdoors from the start.

I could, of course, just put the seed trays outdoors. I think that I would have better luck with temperature and moisture control if the seeds do not have individual cells, but are planted in some kind of a tray, perferably one that is deeper than the standard 2 1/2 inches.

I suppose I could use something like a kitty litter tray and drill holes in it. I guess that is what I have pictured.

Any suggestions?
