It looks like Cherry Bark Oak (Quercus pagoda) to me. Was this a more lowland or wet site, like maybe just above a flood plain or a stream?

Looks like a southern red oak (quercus falcata) to me...very similar looking to cherrybark oak. I know southern red oak acorns are a bright orange when you crush them on the sidewalk.

Was this planted or growing wild?

I think it's some type of hybrid, with Quercus falcata as one of the parents. Quercus laevis (Turkey oak) is common in the panhandle, so it could be hybrid of those two.

This oak was growing on the grounds of a rest area on a high bluff very close to the Appalachicola River - the soil appeared to be dry and very well drained. I know what you mean about those orange acorns, jqpublic - the ones I pick up from what I've assumed are red oaks on my property are orange inside, orangy brown on the outside. The acorns under this oak were small and mostly plain brown with only a few of them showing orange on the cap side.
I went outside and picked up leaves on my property from what I've assumed were southern red oaks and post oaks. I don't know if my red oaks are q. falcata or q. pagodifolia - the red oak leaves are on the left. The leaves on the Appalachicola oak didn't look the same, they were still green combined with some red, whereas my red oaks never have pretty color, just green or brown. Of course, this may have to do with the growing conditions.
I'm beginning to think there are more hybrids out there than I realized, which is logical, since these oaks were all growing near other, different type oaks. I'll be planting up the acorns today - I'll probably be even more confused when they come up, so I'll just pick the most vigorous and/or interesting looking to plant.

Left is Southern Red Oak right is Post Oak.
They can vary in their leaf shape somewhat in Southen Red Oaks.

Q. laevis (turkey oak).

Looks like it may very well be turkey oak.
Whatever it is, I've planted its acorns - hopefully, I'll get some good trees to plant!

It should be a Southern Red Oak because they have the distinctive leaf base that is rounded or U-shaped most of the time. And also the leaves are very golden/green or brownish green on the undersides.

Turkey Oak has mostly a attenuate to acute leaf base.

After looking at the picture several times, I'm also going to agree that it's most likely Southern Red Oak.

I agree with the others, Q. falcata on the left and Q. stellata on the right.

And just a note on Oaks and fall color, it seems to be largely dependent on soil type(pH, texture, nutrient levels,etc.), climate, and genetics. A few species do produce good fall color regardless of climate and soil type, as long as both are within the adaptability of the species (like Q. coccinea). While most Oaks are more affected by soil and climate, like Q. stellata for example which produces mostly purple and red fall colors here, while in other areas, especially the deep South, it seems to produce more yellow-brown fall colors. The intensity of their purple-red fall color here does vary from year to year as well(the climate effect). There could be some genetics involved also, as there could be some genetic differences from one population to another within a species' range, although I've never seen any study that specifically demonstrates that is the case with Oaks it does seem logical it would be the case.
