Anyone growing a kentucky wonder?

I heard about this from a friend who says he has one here in chicago growing. I will post pics when I go to his house. TyTy calls it a Musa kentucky wonder. Does this maybe have a different name? Supposed to have edible bananas? I ordered one I guess Ill tell you guys how it goes next year. Heres there website. He said it grows back like his basjoo do.

Oh and it says the leaves turn bright yellow in fall!

There is no 'Kentucky Wonder'. Please do a google search for Ty TY, or go to gardenwatchdog.com to read more about this very disreputable nursery. I know someone in Bowling Green, KY that ordered one and it grew just fine, but never came back this year despite heavy mulching. Sorry to see you already ordered one. Next time, do some research on the company you are ordering from.

I have always (30 yrs) grown Kentucky Wonders. My father grew them when I was a child. I also grow a bean called Burpee Early Riser which became Kwintus which became Northeaster, as well as a couple of others like annelino (spelling?) Last year I finally tasted each bean raw and decided I really like the Kentucky wonder best. I've never tried the Kentucky Blue, just saw it this year at Pinetree, and might try some. I also noticed last year that the Kentucky Wonders were favored by the Jap. beetles. They ate those leaves before going to the other beans. I now want to know if the Kent. Blues are also preferred or if (hopefully) the beetles might not like them as well.

Bless you, kroach. This is your lucky day. I hope you picked the beans. If they are the thickness of a pencil, you are just fine. How to cook them? 1. snap them into 1 1/2 inch pieces. 2. put them in a pot with about two inches of water. 3. slice in some onion; add salt and pepper. 4. toss in a couple of slices of bacon or some pieces of ham 5. Let simmer uncovered until the beans are done to your liking. Watch the water, don't let it evaporate, but don't cover them either or you'll lose the pretty green color. Don't boil them to death or you'll get mush and lose all the vitamins. I've been using those microwave steam bags and they work real well too. That's another way to cook them. I just know others will have new ways for you too. Good luck!

I agree with the above. While day temps are rising, soil temps are still low - and beans need high soil temps to germinate quickly. They are notoriously vulnerable to rot when planted in cool soil. There's nothing wrong with trying to get them in early... as long as you have enough seed to replant later if they fail. Even if only a few plants survive, they will give you a jump on the season. If you want to rush the season in the future, consider planting varieties with good cool-soil tolerance. Since you were already growing a pole, I would recommend "Emerite" and "Fortex".

We have grown Blue Lake bush beans for three years now. Love them. Since I took over major gardening responsibility two years ago, on recommendations I read here, I decided to plant some pole beans. I could not find Blue Lake pole beans, so I planted Kentucky Blue. Not as good, did not produce any longer into summer than Blue Lake bush beans did. If I can't find Blue Lake pole beans next year, will only grow Blue Lake bush.

Kentucky Wonder is the name of a green bean that has been one of the old favorites for many years in home gardens! Maybe your bananas will taste like beans?

The leaves turn bright yellow in Fall? Sounds like the plant dying. If the leaves on any of my bananas turned bright yellow I would freak out and cut them down knowing that they were already goners. Can anyone confirm that these do change color without dying?
