Hard to say, but the seed looks about the size of a Salak Palm.

I doubt they were a cold hardy type but Gro Rite surprised me today when I pulled in facing a load of large palm trees. I can't remember the types but they were not bananas or those posted here. Prices were $199 and $399. Good luck fitting them into your garage for the winter! Looked good though!

The sugar cane I have does contain some prickles, & leaf blades have razor sharp edges - but bamboos & many other grasses can have that as well. It def. looks like something in the grass family - but not sugar cane. I think a closeup of the stems & leaf bases would be helpful, because from a distance they look very much like dracaena or pandanus, tho I don't believe it is either. Of course, I am no expert; this is just my opinion. & if you do a Google Image search, there is no sugar cane w/ such tiny segments - even the Pele's Smoke has normal sized segments like other sugar canes. A very easy way to tell is to cut a stalk & taste - sugar cane is unmistakably sweet & juicy & sap is clear & watery, not thick or milky. I don't wish to be responsible for poisoning someone tho... I would def. post this on the 'Name That Plant' forum, there are botanical geniuses there.
