What's a more upright Oak
Comments (9)'Regal Prince' is upright but not incredibly thin and will eventually branch out to 15-20'. Also 'Beacon' is an upright Swamp White Oak that will eventually reach the same in width. These are both very adaptable so long as your soil is not super high pH. Regal Prince is my preference as the leaves are very dark and glossy with lighter undersides that show nicely whenever there is a slight breeze. You could also choose 'Streetspire' or 'Crimson Spire', both English and White Oak hybrids. They have nice fall color but may end up a little thinner in the 12-15' range. Overall I would say they grow a little slower than the previous two I mention which could be good (or not) depending on what you are going for. Keep in mind most options will look columnar for a few years before the side branching begins to increase....See MoreBirthday Candle oak tree, how you like them ?
Comments (40)water, talking to em, and lov'in em. feeding them nothing, really. if you carefully increase water to them, they will grow at a faster rate. the flower beds that they are in, even in the lawn areas of where they are planted are raised. that let's the water drain and stay away from the trunks, and you can water them more often than normal. my little secret. good luck. man they've grown alot. look at the above pics and compare to the lower pictures. I really likes oaks !...See MoreUrban Pinnacle Oak or Autumn Gold Gingko? Chicagoland
Comments (20)There is a berm there but heavy clay soil, so this tree needs to be drought tolerant and clay tolerant. ==>>> no matter what you plant ... no tree will be drought tolerant for 2 to 5 years ... the bigger the transplant.. the longer the time ... at the link ... read about planting in clay .... there are extremely few trees that cant cope with such ... its when we improperly transplant into it.. or water improperly.. when most failure occur .... have you ever had a soil test done.. to find out if your clay lacks anything besides drainage?.. a quick call to your COUNTY extension office.. might get you a fast general answer .... and how to have a soil test done ... and based on that ... the world is your oyster.. as to choosing options .... finally.. there is little instant gratification with trees ... at 41 ... lol ... you really do have a lot of time to go smaller ... personally.. i would never go with a 2 inch caliper tree ... in my case .. due to budget .... but if you have it.. go for it ... but even then.. i might go with only a 1 inch ... the smaller the transplant.. the faster it gets settled.. ESTABLISHED.. and the faster it will grow to specs ... and once there.. tree do grow rather fast ... i planted 6 foot bare root oaks ... and 15 years later.. they are going on 30 to 40 feet ... and that would only put you at 56 ... not even near the grave.. lol ... ken ps: z5 is half the US .. give us a big city name and state ... just in case it matters https://sites.google.com/site/tnarboretum/Home/planting-a-tree-or-shrub...See MoreWhich oak to Plant ?
Comments (66)Okay, it's a narrow growing Burr oak, sorry I had to ask details, I even went up in the post to look but still had to ask. It's nice to be able to get the narrow cultivars when you don't have a large yard, at least you can still have oaks, vs some weak wooded tree that may live 30 years tops. If I was in your position I would do the same, and those oaks you have will likely get 40 feet wide maybe a bit more with a couple, still a great shade tree, I park under a 30 foot (approx) maple, plenty enough to keep my car cool in summer.
