Can someone help ID this banana?

It was purchased on a whim at wal-mart. Came in a 10" pot for $4. I've had it maybe 6 or 8 weeks. It's absolutely beautiful. The label just "cavendish" (not dwarf or anything else). If the color doesn't show up well...it's trunk is shiny reddish and the leaves have some (but limited) reddish markings. It also has 2 pups coming along. I think I'm in love! Now what exactly is it?

It looks like a Dwarf Red. I've never seen a Cavendish with a red pseudostem.

Yes, Gomera and other old unknown mangos. The fruit is good, but not excellent. I will keep those trees until my new trees are big. Then I will remove the old ones, since irrigation water is so expensive and I'm not interested in selling fruit..

They're really cheap, so treating it like an annual is cool. I always dug mine up and tossed them in paper bags. Eventually they got really big, like wagon wheels, so I'd cut them apart and store the pieces. When I got bored of them, I just let them in to rot back in during winter.

They are both orb weavers. I'm pretty sure that the second on is Araneus diatematus, European Garden spider (common in Europe and North America). The first one is difficult to ID since it appears to be photographed from underneath. But she is sitting in the middle of her orb web. The cute spider eating the fly has got to be one of the jumping spiders.

I would have to disagree. Cavendish do have red pseudostems and that is definetly not Dwarf Red. Dwarf Red has red petioles as well and is not that dark red on the pseudostem. Maybe youve never seen a Cavendish with a red pseudostem because when they are small young plants they are often green, but twhen they mature and if there are not dead sheaths covering them then they will have red exactly like that.

I agree with Gabe, I have had some red-trunked cavendish bananas planted.

Why is it sitting in a pot, and not in the ground? It will grow bigger & more nice faster in the ground. In your clime you should be able to fruit cavendish bananas..

It really is a beautiful banana! And it still looks like this even when we had hurricane bands (admittedly far out) but with sustained gusts of 30-60 mph for a couple of hours! My yard is very sloped so I was hoping to keep this on the patio for a tropical effect. I might take some of the pups and plant in them ground in zone 9 (where I won't have to worry about the lawnmover sliding out of control)

Ahhh, Good points Gabe. You're right, I've never grown my DC's that large yet. Rot always kills them off first.

Move to Florida! This banana was about 1/2 this size about a month ago.
