white flies....

ok.. I know they aren't the worst problem to have in your garden.. but they are annoying.. and will multiply faster than the speed of light.

My question is do you have a way to make those yellow card sticky traps?...They are hard to find in the stores....and what usually happens is I have loads more of the critters before I come across some of the cards to purchase.

I have seen sights suggesting how to make them.. but in 100 + degrees...most of the 'sticky' suggestions would melt away..

I don't like using a pesticide for these...save the big guns for more dangerous critters.. Any ideas would be appreciated.. thanks,Dian

Plant Society Garlic and you won't have the problem. It's a beautiful addition to any garden and the blooms are quite pretty. If you brush up against it you will smell garlic. Someone also told me they plant it near their roses and it seems to keep bugs away from them!

I have not had white flies in years!

hmmm..actually I already have some of that(Tulbaghia violacea).It hasn't seemed to work as well for me.. this is second invasion of the 'flies' this year.Just how many society garlic do you have planted??Perhaps I need more??

Re-pot the plant in any soil labeled "potting soil" (or you can use a mixture of peat moss, clay soil, and pine bark fines like I use). Do any necessary pruning on the plant (not root pruning, this will stress the plant more because of whiteflies). Mix a solution of dawn dish soap and water in a spray bottle and spray it on the tree (not the soil). Wait about 3 weeks, and use the soap again. Repeat the process 3-4 times or until the whiteflies are gone. It may also help to spray it down with a strong jet of water.

Many things called "a serious pest of [x]" in various agricultural publications are less of an issue for home gardeners. This is because we don't have to produce veggies with perfect eye appeal. We accept that stuff that comes from our gardens has the marks of nature on it. For market gardeners and farmers, even minor visible pest damage can be a big deal because customers, distributors, markets etc. won't buy that stuff, but it's not for people growing their own veggies in their back yards for their own uses. So as long as the pest doesn't render veggies inedible/untasty and doesn't stunt production too much or kill the plant, it can be entirely tolerable.

Many previous control discussions here the search will pull up for you for more tips. I linked 1 of them below. As Jim said - yellow sticky traps, make your own traps using Tanglefoot, DE (diatomaceous earth), or one of the many soap-based insect sprays available on the market will help. But in warm climates they tend to just keep coming back and one of the things that attracts them - other than the moisture - is excess nitrogen use on the plants. Thank you, Babka and lgteacher! I appreciate the suggestions, however the situation is too out of hand to deal with via spraying water. It is a bunch of tall trees, it would take hours, and then still probably wouldn't work. I bought the jumbo bag of castings. ; ) I am shemailing the local county garden folk to see what they say. I already put some down and watered it in as best I could. I couldn't get up all the leaves. I am trying to find out how much and how often. It doesn't sound like you could hurt a plant with castings, but, I'd hate to find out too late. It is my impression that mosts pests don't actually kill the plants ... right???? Please say yes!

Seems to me some said to buy yellow construction paper and coat it with petroleum jelly?

..yes Trolip..but I think it would melt and run off.wouldn't you ?.I might try it.. I'm getting desperate!
