Am I seeing this right or not?

See the picture of the plants' leaves in the community pot.

YIKES!!!

Buyers beware!!!

If it is, buying this bulb can totally wipe out your collection...easily!

It does look like mosaic virus. I wouldn't judge with out actually seeing the plant,but I wouldn't buy it to find out. If they are oblivious enough to post such a picture,I would be reluctant to buy any Amaryllid from them,because insects transfer that disease rapidly.There are several very knowledgable people selling that species and others. Gardenweb has a search function where you can find fellow members sometimes selling species, also.

These aren't your typical silly hybrids so I would say the price is pretty good....a tad high because of import costs, but I've never seen them that cheap here in the good ol' USA.......I would love any contact you might have RB that can sell a blooming size Griffinia of this species for the $30 range. I know only one person in FLA that sells them and his prices are much higher....still worth it for a plant that rare in cultivation, but too much for me to afford or I would buy every species he has!! You should be able to DHL express a box full of these for around $10 U.S. from Taiwan.....it should be approx. $10 per Kg from there (this is the cost from China and India and Thailand anyway) which would likely be 50 bulbs....cheaper than anyone in the U.S. would ship them to you for I'm afraid. The APHIS permit is free and takes less than 5 minutes to apply for...the only hitch is the phyto and you only need that if you want to be legal about it....lots of people are not, although all of my imports I pay the phyto for because it only adds a tiny fraction on to the cost if you are buying a few hundred bulbs. Of course, many of these take several years to bloom from seed so if you pay $30 and save 5 years then this is roughly 1.5 cents per day.....my time is worth that I guess so cost is not an issue at that price. Importing to me makes perfect sense if the plant is rare, but I have never heard of Rare Bulb Importers in FLA so I'd love to get the web addy if possible. Hi Robert, I did turn it in but it's not new news to them. It just burns my backside in the worst way to shell out the bucks for the physo cert and still get dirty bulbs :( I did get a refund for the bulbs cost but of course not the shipping or the d@mn cert. I'm really thankful that they didn't get retailed,that would have been a real nightmare! A few years ago I started potting up random samples from bulbs intended for dry bulb sales to get an idea of how accurite my suppliers were. Lets just say they have been getting steadily worse. Hi Tokyomafia, Plant viruses are usually spread by infected plant juices.Biting insects like aphids and dirty tools are the most common ways they get around.They also get spread in dirty tissue cultures. Sometimes a plant that is virused but otherwise healthy and unstressed will put out clean looking growth. Don't be fooled,the plant still has the virus.They can't be cured by chemical or hot water treatment. Your bulbs may grow well and there might be only small symptoms like the color breaks in the leaves or flowers but you run the risk of it spreading to not only other hippies but a wide variety of other plants.It's a difficult situation,you lose big bucks if you destroy the bulbs but you can lose a lot more plants if you don't. Hey! Is that pot full of tulip bulbs still around? Probably not, since it was a pot, afterall... but I wouldn't give up on them after one non-growing spring. Bulbs can sometimes remain alive but dormant for more than one growing season. One example: A little over 2 years ago I planted crocus bulbs quite late (ground had frozen early, but we had a late December thaw and I got them in the ground then). The following spring, no crocus. But, to my surprise (at the time), the next spring, up they came! Who knows, maybe not all of them, but still, the majority just hung out dormant for the year, and popped up the next time their time was right. I am actually just now wondering what to do with a bunch of bulbs I picked up in the fall and didn't get planted... I could plant in the ground, and see what happens. But then, if they don't come up, I wouldn't know if they'd come up spring of '07. And if they do come up, they'd probably be late, and foliage might get in the way of follow-up plantings. Or I could pot 'em. Or just store them in a cool place and plant next fall if they look/feel healthy. Hmmm... what to do, what to do? (Probably this will be a decision made by non-decision!!)

Thank you Del for confirming that. To use that picture of virused plants as their sample pic means they do not know their plants are virused???

Oh my goodness, it gives me the "creeps". And this Ebay seller has been selling plants on Ebay for years. Sharing his/her "misfortune" to other gardeners.

Donna...The virus marks would be the white/yellow mottling on the leaves. As Del IDed...mosaic virus.

DEL...I need your opinion on these pics please. Virus or not?

I can't tell for sure. My eyes have failed badly this past year and I need new glasses. I could never say for sure,without seeing the plant,when I had good vision.
That being said;don't I see evidence of spider mites?
Are those tiny webs I see, or are they irregularities on the leaves surface? Sometimes minor element deficiency can cause mottling similar to that. Spider mites and a few other very small insects can suck the life out of a plant and you won't see them without a magnifying glass. I would recommend that you show it to a county agricultural agent. They see a lot of disease and insect damage.
