That's what I get for not labeling.......

there's a thread made by me about "Ivy Geraniums" and why they are standing straight up with no potential to drape and that they are supposed to be second year bloomers, and they are making buds..... WELLL...... they aren't ivy geraniums!

I mislabeled so bad this year that I mixed up verbena with salvias - until they grew and I recognized the mistake - but I had never grown ivys geraniums.

They are planted next to the zonals, but the leaves were a lot different (that should have been my clue....) Anyway, I realize NOW... they are RUDBECKIA TRILOBAS!!! (And the ivy geraniums look like my large zonals, but just lower and spreading... DUH.....

Thanks for anyone who tried figuring out why my ivys weren't draping (or spreading now for that matter)... Gosh, that was dumb...

Too funny Carrie! But now I have no one to commiserate with over my trailing osteospermum and my stand-up-straight verbenas and petunias!

Well,.... are you SURE that's what they are!! LOL - all kidding aside, this was my third year wintersowing and my worst year for mislabeling. I think I was getting too "cocky" and figured I would recognize and remember everything.... well, now I know better!

Hope you resolve your straight/draping problem... I know the feeling only too well with confusion.

Thanks, Chris once again you got it. I did plant Tecoma stans seeds last winter and was sent a cestrum cutting a couple months ago. I really need to label the plants as soon as I plant them but even when I don't you've been able to ID them anyway : ) Karyn

We had a long discussion about it two or three years ago. MichaelG suggested that it should and could be alternaria blight. Comparing my roses to the very few photos of alternaria available I had serious doubt that it could be anything else but botrytis. I also sent photos to NCStte univeristy that provides consultation and does lab tests for Extension Services. They came back with Botrytis. I also sent them samples but by the time they got it the samples were contaminated with something that is present on dying tissues. They ruled out alternaria - the guy who answered my emails and dent the report on the samples is an expert on alternaris, so I guess, if he rules that out, I should accept this as a fact. So still don't know the scientific answer but those roses of mine sure looked botrytis ridden to me. I also found a paper from Brazil that stated that if humidity's is over 90% for many hours, botrytis spores could survive up to 112F. Here, relatively close to the coast we have o0ver 90^% humidity and dew from early evening till mid morning.That amounts to more than 10 hours, rather more. This again leads me to believe that was botrytis I had. Baldo also said the Botrytis is a year-around problem in Hawaii.

I got home last night and here is what has bloomed from my Lowes specials. 2 of the 3 aphrodite have bloomed and both are aphrodite( just beautiful). Of the 3 minerva 2 have bloomed one is a orange soverign, and the other was apple blossom. Of the 3 Apple Blossoms, 1 has bloomed it was Apple Blossom. Of the 3 Vera, one has bloomed and it was Vera, of the 3 Lady Jane, one has bloomed and it was Lady Jane, of the 6 susan, 1 has bloomed and it was Lady Jane, of the 6 Prince Carnivals, 1 has bloomed , I have no idea what it is. The stem is very tall over 20 inches it towers over the other plants. It is dark red, with a small white throat, and the outside is dark red w/white streaks. My husband took a picture of it, while I was at the coast. Looks like a few will bloom this week, I will post the results as I get them. Nothing is blooming at the coast, I have them in the ground with mulch, it was 30 degrees for almost 5 days. The leaves took a hit, but it looks like they are coming back since the weather is back int he high 60's. I've decided I need to make a bunch of plant tags when I plant my seeds. When it's time to plant, welllll, I don't TAKE the time. I think to myself, I'll remember what and where I planted. Nope! Oh, I remember some but..... And the jugs that are marking a few spots are NOT very pretty in my flower beds! :^(

Towards the end of my WSing, I started writing up plant tags on cut up pieces of vinyl blinds from the thrift store and, BOY, did that help at planting our time. This coming year I have huge aspirations - - I will make plant tags soon as I get seed and store them with the seed. Then when I am "knee deep in dirt" making my jugs, I won't have to bother. We'll see if I actually do it!

You have to admit, though, that it's rather fun the see what they turn out to be. :-) I have quite a few mislabeled seeds. I neglected some, pampered others. Turned out to be a mistake, because those that I neglected were actually what I had been looking for..duh.

Nancy, those are my favorite tags. The best kind. Last year during a gardening lull, I made a huge number of plant tags from mini blinds I got from Freecycles. They are the most economical tags and most practical. I just moved them from the container to the ground when I planed out the seedlings. They don't fade in the sun. They are reused over and over again because I write with a #2 pencil. Last year I sent some seedlings to a friend in Iowa. She just told me that the tags are still perfectly legible.

The best recycling effort for me.
