Bamboo for privacy in zone 5/6

Looking for bamboo for privacy screen in zone 5/6 and a elevation of 2550 ft. I will need for it to be at least 20ft tall and dense. Would "Arundinaria gigantea" be good for this?

Do you expect it to be evergreen? Most bamboo will suffer leaf/culm damage in the winter in your Zone.

Yes it would have to be evergreen. I have seen bamboo that stayed green all winter this year.

Hi, Idaho. I'm in zone 5a only few miles from 4b. Put a couple of Fargesia murieliae in last spring. Overwinter low was -17F in Dec & Jan w/ plenty more days w/ subzero lows. F. m. has come thru w/ flying colors. Mulched well w/ shredded cedar mulch & pine needles. No protection otherwise. Already greening up w/ new growth w/in a couple inches of last years top. I planted for the same reason you want. It's a clumper so it won't go all over and height/spread is good for screening. Hope this helps. Dave - Colorado Springs

Hello, I recently purchased bamboo plants from a farm in southern Indiana. It's been rainy where I live (Central Indiana), so the bamboo has been growing fast. Almost all the bamboo plants have 1-3 new shoots since I planted them in March. I have atrovaginata bamboo, Golden Crookstem bamboo, and Black bamboo. Should I fertilize them or leave them alone? (I have never fertilized any trees, only grass.) Does the black bamboo need any special care? Thanks in advance.

Whenever size information comes from selling sources, it's 100% of the time going to be wrong. And they're stating a size after only a few years of growth, where the tree will not stop. Figure at least double size of whatever you're told. A fat clump of lilac in the tree form sounds like a great solution to the back right bed. You need some groundcover there, too. consider lily of the valley (so long as there's shade.) It does great there. Gotta be some Hosta somewhere, too. And daylilies in the sun. Can you post photos? Climbing fig will not survive in Chicago so that's not it whatever it is :-) Zone 5 is also the very minimum any clumping type of bamboo will survive and even then you could expect to see a lot of winter die back.

Arundinarea gigantea is hardy to about -10F, which means it suffers aboveground damage above that temp, and completely dies at or below that temp. There are hardier bamboo, like P. nuda (a runner) and some of the Fargesias (which are clumpers). If you are in Zone 5/6, it would be good to find out the species that does well there, because there aren't many that will stay evergreen in your low temps. Below is a link to someone who grows a lot of bamboo in Zone 6. You can get an idea from this link of what suffers the least in thar area.

We sell bamboo and have sold it to every state except the dakotas. havnet had anyone say it didnt grow when they plant it as directed.
