Groundcover under an oak tree
Comments (4)I live in the Pacific NW but my favorite groundcovers under trees (dry shade, root competition) are: Vinca major and minor- many variegated forms Groundcover comfrey, Symphytum iberis- aggressive green rough leaves, blue/pink fading to white blooms in spring, and variegated form Goldsmith- bright, not as aggressive Anemone nemarosa- blooming clumps in spring, goes dormant and disappears in late summer Geranium macrorrhizum- blooms, very drought tolerant, spreads quickly Lemon balm Wintergreen- wonderful glossy evergreen leaves, little tubular flowers, red berries, takes a while to fill in I would not plant most of these together except the Geranium, Comfrey, and Lemon balm....See MoreDrought tolerant groundcover suggestions
Comments (3)Dig out a spot in the center, place a fire ring with some nice large rocks encircling it. Place a few benches (or make rugged, natural wood looking ones) and fill remaining "dead area" with a nice pea gravel and/or small river rock and Voila... a personal outdoor fireplace, or campfire pit, or w/e you wanna call it. Put a friendly sign there to accompany it if you want to, LOL! Heck, even plant a couple showy specimen plants arranged behind the benches (like yuccas?). I know it's not "plants" to fill the space, but when thinking of your situation... that's what I'd do, hehe. A little overhead to begin with, but no upkeep for years to come. Good luck!...See MoreWhat will grow under large pine trees?
Comments (2)I had flowering heather/heath reccomended to me by a plant store person since they handle the acidity found under pine trees nicely, being an evergreen themself. I trimmed off the lower branches of my white pine and big spruce to let in enough light that I think it will qualify as partial sun and plan on getting them later when I have money available....See MoreSuggestions for planting under large trees?
Comments (7)We've used Turk's cap (malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondi) under the dense shade of a fruitless mulberry with good results. They will grow to ~4ft in shade if left alone, but can be kept trimmed to about 2ft which may fit your space. Cedar sage (salvia roemeriana) is a smaller option. It grows naturally under cedar (juniper) trees. We have some growing under a dwarf peach. We've used columbine (aquilegia canadensis, a. chrysantha) and pigeon berry (rivina humilis) under the more dappled shade of crepe myrtles. Non-natives we've used under trees include pink oxalis (probably oxalis crassipes) and bearded iris, though iris does not bloom reliably in heavy shade....See Moreva_highlander
