bamboo in containers

I've got a fence that is half lattice. Since it backs a parking lot, I wanted something to cover it for a bit more privacy. Clematis armandii, however, is not behaving very well, as it is trying to climb, strangle, and take over everything in sight (namely, my japanese maples).

I need something narrow that will provide a privacy screen, but is not terribly invasive. I have considered perhaps planting bamboo or nandina in some rectangular planters along the fence (containers because I really do not want them going bonkers). Does anyone have experience with this, or have any alternate suggestions?
