What is happening to my banana???

The leaves are folded over length wise, right along the center vein. I just had a leaf open up and there is another one peeking up and the new leaf is already starting to fold too. Help please??

Perhaps I should treat this as an experiment. I repotted the plant into a container that has Miracle Grow potting mix, we also had a short rainshower and cooler temps ( from the 80's into the high 70's) and also higher humidity. The plant seem to be bouncing back, the leaves are now close to normal spread.
I will see tomorrow if it is just because of the heat making them (is "pinch" the correct term?)fold over, and if it is I will make adjustments to placment so that it does receive more shade at the hottest part of the day.

Thats all normal, dont worry about it. If the leaves just fold you are fine, but if the leaves fold and droop at the same time they just need a water boost.

When I planted my pepper seedlings, a few dropped their leaves and withered. I always thought it was starlings picking off the leaves till a seedling under wire cover also dropped leaves. So unless it was a bug, it was a disease. Looked it up and it could be Phytophthora or bacterial spot, which starts with necrotic brown spots. This can be controlled with fixed sulfer and maneb spray. Also, avoid growing peppers and tomatoes in the same spot for two years. Cuke beetles have really been low in my area this year but that doesn't mean they couldn't have caused the problem. These seemed to die a slower death than sudden wilting. I have had that also. One Sugar Queen this year and one BD yellow last year but I can live with that as long as it doesn't kill them all.

If it's hardy to your zone you have a couple of choices. Whack it down to 1-2' tall, mulch it heavily around the base, let the top stick up until temps are predicted below freezing then mulch it heavily covering the top, you can uncover the top if it's going to be warm during the day. It might even start sprouting on really warm spells. You can just leave it like it is, mulch heavily around the base, the foliage will fall over & you can just pull it off. Or if not hardy, chop it back to 1-3' tall, dig up as much of the root ball as you can, wrap the whole thing in burlap or something like that, store it in a cool, dry place above freezing. In the spring when the ground thaws just plant it. Most bananas are pretty tough and tolerate a fair amount of abuse. I often chop the bases up when transplanting mine & the chunks will grow new bananas. Hope this helps. Tally HO!

No idea. What are your temps, still in the 100's? I grow a full sized banana squash in 100 days, and our temps are only in the 90's for a month. I planted mine, by seed, the first week in June and they're ready to harvest. I'd guess it got ripe and started to cook. With winter squash, acorns being the exception, I pick them when the stem is tan and cracked, or the first frost, which ever comes first. We're looking at frost next week, though.

Well one good thing came out of this... when I repotted I noticed that many roots were traveling out into the soil, so I believe that the new potting mix should increase the "exploration". Thanks for answering this, I was about to give up hope.
