Mine grew to the maximum height of 12" and stay low and very attractive all summer long.
These clumps are 4 years old. I just took these pictures this evening after seeing your question:

Lovely, they truly are. :-) I am glad that yours are growing too. They'll look good with Weigela. They break dormancy very early and begin to set buds the same time as Narcisus Tete-a-tete, I believe, then begin to open up around the second week of May after Mertensia virginica and Primula vulgaris & veris. But this year, everything opens up 3+ weeks earlier, though.

tiffy - I just remembered; you are farther north than Chicago. You are getting longer sunlight in summer. Your plants grow a lot bigger than ours down here. So your Prairie Smoke will grow bigger than mine.

I never thought of that. WOW! I'll try it just the same and see what happens. Maybe my crappy soil will compensate. :O)

Thanks for those great pics, I WS'd Geum triflorum this year too and have several teeny sprouts. It's very helpful to see what the foliage will look like. I understand it does well in dry, well-drained soil.

If it has bloomed already, don't you leave the seedheads up for that feathery look?

The Prarie Smoke I transplanted earlier this season did not make it. I put several seedling in holding pots (I REALLY want this plant!) Should I transplant it after our heatwave this weekend or plant in the Fall? I was tickled pink when they germinated!

tiffy, Prairie Smoke actually does very well in poor soil. :-)
I was them growing in the Rockies rain shadow outside Glacier National Park in Montana.

daisy, I have been transplanting Prairie Smoke seedlings little by little. I always shade newly planted seedlings/divisions in this kind of weather and water them everyday for a week. Most are doing fine. I have lost a couple clumps. I think it's because of heavy rain we have had these past few weeks.

If you don't want to risk it, you might want to wait until it cools off a bit , say until late September - early October.

pitimpinai love your pics. I WS for the first time this year and tryed prairie smoke but got nothing. not sure what I did wrong. Guess I will have to try this winter.

terrene, the seedheads don't hang around long. The wind usually blows them away within a few weeks after blooming.

I transplanted them two days ago and they are just happy little campers around that Weigela. :O) I still have another 3 hunks of seedlings and will get those in mid-week when rain is forecast. Doing the happy dance!

Just potted my teeny sprouts into small pots yesterday. There were about 7 or 8, more than I thought - kind of a prolonged sprouter. I didn't want to plant them out, because they were so small, and we're having such hot dry weather. The sprouts are tiny, just 1 set of true leaves but the root systems were impressive!
