Dear Lizalily... as you recover from your surgery, here are a few photos that might brighten your day... spring is the time of renewing and rebuilding... and that includes two new knees with which to garden! Here's hoping your recovery is as smooth this time as it was the last... Enjoy!

THANKS to all of you for your positive feedback on my photo thread! It helps to have a little 'ray of sunshine' in the dark days of winter, doesn't it? Looking at photos from summer helps get me through the worst of winter. I threw in those creepy 'ugly' pictures so that we all would be a bit more realistic in our longing for summer. Even summer has it bad points.... but winter sure has MORE! LOL Deanna, my camera is an Olympus Stylus-9000. I haven't yet mastered all the features on it since I'm a basic 'point and shoot' kind of photographer. I have to get right up to the bees, etc. to use the super macro mode on it but the bees & butterflies are so busy they don't usually notice me. For those who love my kitty, his name is 'Zeus' and he is the absolute apple of my eye. I love this cat to the moon and back! Hence why he is on a leash. I have lost too many kitties to the road and to the critters out in the woods that surround me and will not let him outside unless leashed, which he doesn't mind. He's quite the handsome boy and SO loveable. And those double paws are irrestible. He uses the extra toes as 'thumbs' and actually picks things up just like a human...we have taught him to shake hands. He sleeps with me every night, plays 'fetch', and can jump straight up in the air as high as my shoulders. He definitely does not know he is a CAT! Celeste Zeus's toes.....

I'm fairly certain it's Lupus going into overdrive... it seems to affect me in cycles... there are times when I'll feel pretty decent for quite a while, like a remission... and then it gets worse, and the symptoms all show up with a vengeance! Right now, it's vengeance time! The pain is horrible, my hair is falling out by the brush full, I'm constantly tired and feverish, I've got rashes and cold sores that come and go, my memory is even worse now, and I've been feeling like I'm on the verge of getting the flu... even my skin hurts at times... all classic symptoms of my lovely autoimmune disease! Hopefully, it will subside fairly soon... I've got too much work to do outdoors! I just keep plodding away, one day at a time... and if I get really tired, I nap. Every year, I try to get all the clean-up done, and keep ahead of the weeds so it's not too bad later in summer. It has helped a lot to mulch the beds, keeping weeds at a minimum. I'm on schedule with all the clean-up, it's the planting I always get behind in! There are tons of seeds to start, orders of plants coming in that need to be potted or planted in the beds, compost piles that need turning so I can utilize the finished product, watering to do... which reminds me... I need to get the soaker hoses all laid out in the beds before the plants get too big! I'm at the point right now where I'm just getting used to the physical labor again... except the bending over! My lower back is not cooperating, and hurts every day! I'm seriously thinking about getting a scooter like Cindee's! Harbor Freight has them for $49.95! It takes a bit, but I'll get back into the swing of things! I hibernate all winter, and then I suffer for my inactivity when it's time to begin the raking and shoveling in spring! A gardener's life is not easy, but the rewards more than make up for it! I'll deal with the pain so I can enjoy fresh veggies and beautiful beds of flowers! I've got the camera batteries on charge right now, so I can get new pictures of the just-opened tulips and daffodils in the morning! I'm saving a file of photos for your convalescence, and I'll begin posting them when you're surgery is complete. Hopefully, seeing all the flowers will take your mind off the pain for a little while, at least!

You know, Lizalily... you could always put your older Dahlia corms up for auction at Ebay, make a little money, and spend it on new Dahlias! In spring, Ebay is loaded with corms and bulbs and roots for sale! And the only energy required would be a little typing, and then bagging up the corms for shipping! Plus, you'd be surprised at how many people would want the older varieties! When it comes to most of the garden chores and projects, I don't trust anyone to do it, but me! Not everyone is familiar with what weeds vs. perennial seedlings look like, or knows that the sod must be taken off first if you want a decent bed, etc... I'd just as soon do most of it myself so I know it's all done right! In response to your idea for adding moisture holding crystals to the raised shade bed, I wouldn't if it were my project... I'd use a bit heavier of a soil mix, and use a good layer of mulch to help hold in the moisture, instead. I despise the new-fangled moisture retaining chemicals and gels! They don't keep the moisture even within the soil mix, and are a waste of time, I feel. I think that a mix with a bit more compost and actual soil, or a mix with some clay type soil, in addition to using layers of old carpeting or newspaper between the plants, with wood mulch over that would be a better choice. That's what I'd go with, anyway. When choosing bagged soils, I always steer clear of the moisture control products, and go for the regular high quality soils, such as MiracleGro or Schultz's. If you plan to add some bagged soil to the bed, Hyponex brand is a heavier, wetter soil mix. By the same token, I wouldn't use Hyponex for any of my containers or anywhere I want to keep really good drainage, either! Hyponex tends to be a damp, muddier type of bagged soil, not good for bulbs! Another item that may help the raised bed with moisture content is an irrigation system... I saw some small, inexpensive systems at Miejer's yesterday that just lay on top of the bed and attach to the garden hose... they have tubing and sprinklers at intervals... the system actually looked kind of cool! The columbine is in full bloom right now, but as soon as it fades and the seed heads ripen, I'll ship you lots and lots of fresh full seed pods! I'm just about ready to give up entirely on keeping permanent markers with their respective plants in the gardens! Every single tag I placed with bulbs or plants last fall either faded to un-readable, or they were pushed out of the ground by weather, critters, and who knows what else! I don't have time now, but when I get some time this coming fall or winter, I want to begin making aluminum tags from cut soda cans... I can then scribe the names of the plants on them with an engraver or just press sort of hard with a pen to "engrave" the writing. I want to hang those from loops on thick wire pieces that can be stuck quite deeply into the soil! It's the only way I can think of to keep name tags with the plants, besides buying the really expensive tags, which is out of the question for so many plants! Dahlias are not my favorite plant, and even though I like a few of the newer ones, I'd have to dig them all up and store them every year... something I'm not willing to do as there is already too much prep work for winter! I have Cannas and Glads to dig, not to mention Oxalis and Hippeastrums! Those are enough! We got another inch or two of rain yesterday... not that we needed it, really... the ground is already saturated! What we really need are several days in a row of sunshine and warmer weather! On a positive note, we picked up a couple of foam garden kneeling pads yesterday, which will really help save my back from bending over so much, and my knees from all the kneeling to plant things! Another box of named Daylilies arrived yesterday, so you know what I'll be doing today!

I have to say that eah of my Daffodil Depot daffs is my favorite when it opens! I planted 2000 daffs last fall and they are all wonderful. Used about 700 of them this past weekend and about that many mid week and to our subscription customers. Only ones I need next year are more solid yellows with different bloom times and some poeticas for the end of season. I kind of bought too many pinks but they were very popular. I think it is "Cool Flame" that I loved the most, very wide flat ruffled cup of intense salmon. THere was also a beautiful orange bell shaped cup on white petals, all quite large...might have been "Big Gun" but not sure. I should research so I know my favorites then post here. Tulips are coming on now. O used up most of my parrots in Easter bouquets and then went into Alladin and Menton and a small purple one. Would have had ballerina but voles got all but one of them! I am anxiously watching my French blend and French Rose blend...nice tall stalks with buds but probably a week away from opening still. Right now Miranda is my most spectacular one. (Looks like a red orange rose when opened. Next year I am planting another 500 parrots in addition to the 200 I had this year...just love the way the colors blend and the apricot and orange ones go so well with the daffodils!

My Friends! What beautiful flowers! and today the world is foggy green outside so the cleer cut red, orange and pink flowers are just great!

My surgeon says he got the knee just as good and straight as the other one, and he is very happy with how it went. That means that I am also very happy with how it went! THe pain is about as light as I think it gets here, and I Have good pain meds from the Dr so hopefully another 7-10 days and I will be hobbling back outside. that is where I was able to switch over to a cane last time.

I am going to be so happy to be able to work in my garden this summer! And by the end of it I should be in top form...wow! I Have no idea where that even is anymore!

Jody, that red parrot tulip is my favorite and I did not have any of them this year! Thanks for giving me a dose of it!

Lizalily! Welcome back! I'm so glad to see you posting... I was beginning to worry a bit! When the doctor is pleased with surgical results, the patient is usually pleased! I'm very happy everything went according to plan, and even more thrilled that you'll be back out in the garden relatively soon!

Those red parrot tulips are my favorites this year! They are a really true deep red in person, and I think I need to get more at fall planting time! I just have to remember where we got those...

Everyone else who posted is either enjoying spring flowers, or still has hippis blooming... I'm a little envious of those with hippi blooms! But all the photos are just wonderful!

I have no hippes left to bloom, sigh! I do have lycoris radiata with an esimated 38" stem and another in the same pot that is probably 30".They will be so pretty when the burst into bloom!

I miss going out ot my greenhouse and checking on things. MAybe tomorrow while the PT is here she can keep an eye on me while we do it. I have a spray head all hooked up so it will only take me a minute to do it. One of these days I will make it to the Amaryllis condo to see how summer is going, but in the meantime I am trusting the the coolish damp weather and shade cloth. Nothing I Can do right now if there is a problem with it!

I have no hippis left to bloom, either... depressing, isn't it? I did just receive my latest purchase, although it's already bloomed this season... I got a Candy Cane bulb! I also got a few little babies thrown in for good measure! With good care, I think the larger Candy Cane will bloom next year for me! I can't wait for that!

I'm very interested to see your Lycoris in bloom, Lizalily! I hope you're able to photograph it! My little pot of Lycoris radiata is just sitting here, not growing at all. I do hope it grows and blooms once I move it outside.

It won't be long before you'll be back on your feet... last time you had surgery, you were up and about fairly quick! I was very impressed with your progress! This time should be no different!

And I think with the cooler weather, all your bulbs should be fine... you'll be out and about sooner than you think, anyway!

WOW, BUSY MORNING FOR SURE FOR ME! I WAS UP AT 6, THE PT CAME AT 9, AND THEN I RODE ALONG INTO TOWN WITH MY PAL AND WE BOTH WENT TO THE CHIROPRACTOR AND then delivered out bouquets at the internet cafe where we exchanged them for panini and mochas. so now lunch is all taken care of, I have my body realigned to the new posture of my leg, I Have been out and about on a beautiful morning filled with bright flowers and friendship, the pups have been outside and we can all settle down for a good snooze! I found mysef able to get around the places I went quite good though I Am tired out now. I am feeling so hopeful to being back to doing the things that matter for me before long.

Prettiest site in my garden from the driveway is a planting of angelique(like appleblossom amies), white lily flowered tulips and queen of the night(deep purple maroon...Breathtaking! Maybe I can grab my camera and hobble out there in the next couple of days. THE TEMP IS UP TO 66F DEGREES, THE AIR IS STIL, BIRDS ARE SWOOPING AROUND and life is good! And yes,my pain meds are wearing off now, LOL.

I'm very happy to hear that you're beginning to get around... but don't go overdoing it! It's not worth having to go back to the doctor to redo something! Take it easy and rest!

Larry is my own personal chiropractor, deep tissue massage therapist, and worker of pressure points... he keeps me aligned and in good shape! As fast as my body is breaking down, I need to have my bones kept in alignment. The hips, back and shoulders come out all the time, and with a few quick pops, he resets everything. It's amazing!

This is my favorite time of year... everything comes out of dormancy, begins to green up, and flowers... and the birds are busy building nests and laying eggs... even the air smells fresh and alive!

Your flowers sound wonderful... photos would be nice, but I'd rather have you resting up and getting better! We have all summer to view flowers!

Jodi, the lycoris radiata is just sitting there on its long stems. I seem to remember it did that the other time it bloomed too. I will certainly take photos as it opens.

It has been a tough week, because DH could not get off work the first 3 days of this week, like I had planned so I have been home alone and struggling. Today I awoke to find him still here and he will be home with me tomorrow too, so now I am happier. Things are healing well, but of course I want them all healed and functional again and am ready to get on with gardening! That is the hardest part is just sitting and watching the garden grow around me! I am trying to pretend that it is "The Secret Garden" and like the book, I will come in over the summer, let myself in the (non existant) gate in the (non existent) hedges and set to work reclaiming it.

Thank you all for the beautiful photos! I look at them each day and enjoy them anew!

And have you noticed, catalogs are starting to come in now with fall offerings of Hippes!

Way to go Lizalily! Sounds like Monday was a great day. It must have made you feel so good to actually get in a car and go somewhere. You're on your way. Before you know it, this will be just a vague memory. You mention catalogs for fall with Hippis, I've not received any yet. Who were they from, if you don't mind me asking? I don't know where I'm going to put even one more, but that desire is growing -- and mine are still blooming! Nothing to post today, but very soon now the tree peonies will be in bloom and yet more hippis. Keep feeling better :-)

I am so happy that you are on the road to a full recovery. I know how much you love the garden and it is wonderful that you will be able to enjoy it even more now.

Those are fabulous Epidendrums, Jody! I love them! I'm hoping the one I have will bloom soon... I think it's an orange colored bloom, if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks! I have a whole loveseat outside that is completely filled with the orange colored epi's (yellow frilled lips with polka dots sometimes too)- they are so rewarding and ask for so little care. The one thing they do like is sun - that's the trick to lots of really nice blooms. Let me know how yours does.

Mine is a cutting from a dear friend... it's grown in a fast draining medium, very similar to what I use for my bulbs. It seems to like the east window it's in, and has 2 babies growing from leaf nodes. They're a bit too small to separate yet, but I think over summer they will be big enough to take off of the mother plant. I'm hoping for flowers sometime this year, and I'll post pictures when it spikes. It's my very first orchid!

My second orchid is a Cymbidium... this one is in orchid bark and a clear plastic pot... it's in the same window as the Epi, and seems to be doing well... it should bloom after it gets exposed to a little cool weather this fall.

These are the first orchids that seem to actually be thriving in the less than perfect environment I can provide for them. I plan on adding more Epis and Cyms to my jungle in the future. Both orchid types come in a wonderful array of colors and interesting bloom shapes... and the species types are even more interesting!

It's all Cindee's fault, I tell ya! She got me hooked on orchids! I'm really glad, though... they're lovely plants, even when not in bloom!

Yours are so pretty in all those different colors! Do any of the colored ones have a nice scent?

The epidendrums are awesome! WHere do you live that you can grow those outside? I love their pretty little faces!

None of the reed stem type epidendrums have a scent (that I know of). If you are looking for scent, some of the encyclias (used to be classed as epidendrums) are very heavily scented. Encyclia Cordigera is in bloom now and scents up a whole room. You might also try maxillaria tenuifolia (coconut scented - really strong in fact I notice the scent before the flowers) I've heard it does well in cooler weather. I have seen it bagged in Lowes. Or, if I can figure how to start a cutting (it grows a little differently) I will be happy to send it to you.

Liza, I live in S. Florida. I am trying these newer hybrids to see how they handle the hot and humid Florida summers. I hope they do well as the colors are so bright and cheerful.

Well... I suppose I could just keep Epis for their ease of culture and their beauty... and keep Cyms for scent! I've read that some Catts might do well in my home environment... I could always try some of those that have a scent!

I don't know too much about the different Encyclias... and I have no idea how to root part of one... but I'm appreciative of the offer, Jody, thanks! Don't worry... I'll watch Lowe's and other stores... who knows what I'll find!

Jodi, Lycoris Raidata is opening this morning! I see it will be either red or pink..light is behind it right now so hard to tell. I will get a photo when I am up later. MY very own MOther's Day Gift to myself, LOL.

As to catalogs with amaryllis for fall orders, I have recived a Dutch Gardens catalog with some, and McCLure and Zimmer (Of the mislabled but healthy bulbs!) is on line with theirs. OH, how ever will I restrain myself!? (Money?)

I look forward to seeing your Lycoris, Lizalily! Mine is doing nothing... just sitting here in its pot. I think it will do something once it goes outside and receives a little sunshine and fresh air!

If there is a way to refrain from ordering more hippis, I'm not aware of it! I have all summer to go over my list of "must haves" and try to whittle it down to a reasonable number of bulbs! I don't know how successful I'll be, but one thing is for sure... I can't buy them all! I'd like to, but I just can't!

Is it just me, or does it seem like the catalogs and websites come earlier and earlier every year?! I'd better get my orders in early, though, so I'm assured of getting the varieties I want!
