First week planting out here!

Well, just about the end of the 1st week...

Geez, I don't know if I'm ever ever going to be used to this mountain living lol!

I probably could have planted out quite a few things earlier with the Red Russian Kale and Dutch Grey Pea but it rained and rained it seemed forever and was just too yucky cold. Not to mention that we were still getting frost up until 1st week in June...some right into begging of last week but are living right in town which is down in a valley.....cold air settles :O

The weather is quite nice these days and I took advantage! We went from barely 46F to near 80....NICE.

Of the wintersow seedlings (actually sown in week 1 of April), I finally planted:

Chinese Forget-me-nots

Calendula 'Citrus Cocktail'

Blue Flax

Malva 'Zebrina'

Coreopsis lanceolata

Wanted to do more today and still may IF this rain passes on. If so, I'll plant out more Malva, Rudbeckia, Coreopsis, Swamp Milkweed, Chives and whatever else looks good and ready :)

I was glad to also be able to get my indoor started toms and peppers in the ground....I had to pot them up 2x....grrrrr....that's how early these need to be started around here and I may be cutting it too close....sigh....BUT I do already have a few peppers developing...yippie....

I had to re-sow a few containers this week also: Gaillardia 'Burgundy' and Common Gaillardia, Shasta Daisy and Penstemon pinnifolius compactum. I did get one seedling of the Penstemon, but I want/need more!! Ever since our Bonnie from Colorado posted pics last year I've had to have it :)

The Penstemon 'Husker's Red' is totally up and going, but needs to grow on a little more before transplanting out. I also started some Lupine (Russell), Morning Glory 'Star of Yelta' and a dwarf variety of Marigold.

By the way, in case anyone is wondering what I'm doing about the deer, I went with a product called Deer Out and so far so good. BUT now guess what....I now need to buy Gopher Out if there is such a thing LOL!! No damage yet, but those little critters are getting way close.....sigh....

Glad you're geting to plant out Vera - wow, what a zone difference for you!

Hubby had a ground hog problem in his veggie bed for the past few years. This year he put one of the liquid fence "bottles" on a stake we've been making up in there and so far...no sign of the ground hog. Are ground hogs the same as gophers?

I don't think ground hogs and gophers are the same, but they do the same damage. I saw a hole leading under our shed a few days ago and I gave it my treatment: first the hose full blast in it for about 10 minutes; then a couple of large stones to block it. They are very good at removing large stones but there's nothing moved since then so I figure I discouraged it (ground hog). I have an apple tree and the dropping green fruit attracts them. Sometimes I go out and see them sitting on the grass, an apple between both front paws, muching away. And they don't move unless I chase them. Have to cover all my greens or I won't get any.
Vera, I'm still trying to get Blue Flax to grow like yours. What we have here must be something different. Good luck in you new garden.

Wow, it's great to see all you folks again! Tiffy, so good to hear you are back in the gardening game! And Mary ... I'm with you on the parsley and basil - definite gotta-haves! Ladyrose, I'm doing OK. I've been paring down the garden the last couple of years; given away some stuff, killed a few too. I'll see what has survived this winter and sow annuals to fill in and have some color. And my tomatoes too, of course. Drippy, I'll be moving "warmer" too, once I retire. Which, by the way, was supposed to happen 2 years ago. What is it with this working stuff that I can't seem to get myself out of it? LOL! I've got a long weekend this week, so I will get some sowing done. Think I'll do some petunias and morning glories - haven't done them in a while and that's where I started all those years ago. Floodthelast, last year I used an umbrella to shade some seedlings that were planted in June, during very hot dry sunny weather. This is not good weather for planting or transplanting anything, but can be done with careful watering and shading the plants for a few days. Make sure containers are watered well before planting time - this makes it easier to get the seedlings out and separate the roots. (Since I mostly plant those little babies individually, it really helps.) Seedlings can also benefit from a very dilute balanced liquid fertilizer. I'm strictly organic, so use liquid seaweed, about 1 tablespoon of the seaweed concentrate per gallon of watering can. This also feeds the soil micro-organisms. I've tried fish emulsion, but that attracted raccoons who would dig up the soil looking for the "fish". Seaweed doesn't attract critters. Some people use a diluted compost tea and say this works wonders for seedlings. I just got my peas (and lettuce, spinach, radishes, etc. seeds) out of the fridge. No inoculant - where do you buy it? My great-uncle just soaks his, don't think he adds inoculant. But I'm thinking of starting them. School conference tomorrow, maybe Thurs? All my peas rotted last year - never came up. But half my lettuce rotted too, hope this year is better. Started my tomatoes Monday (a week ago) and they're almost all up, but won't put those out til Memorial Day (*maybe* Mother's Day but we've had late frosts...) so plenty of time for peas. Got some peppers going, but most still hiding -could take another week or 2 for chiles. Then again, it's going to be 80 tomorrow and Thurs - crazy weather! Should I wait til weekend when things cool off to 50's to plant?

Not truly stand out, but very pleasant surprise at this time of the year. Rarely grown and even more rarely mentioned Rabdosia longituba all of a sudden bursted into 100's blue blooms this weekeend. Last year it was in a somewhat dryish shade location, never past 2' in height and eventhough it bloomed it was somewhat lost in a woodland border. This year I transplanted it in location where it start getting moisture on a more regular basis and progress is amazing. 3-4' tall arching stems literaly covered by flowers. One problem, stems are slender and will flop under weight of water if irrigated from overhead. Cultural requirements the same as for Kirengeshoma. I have straight blue species, but Asiatica Nursery sells white and lavender cultivars if you are interested.

Vera, if it makes you feel any better, it was 100Ã¯Â¿Â½ here today. And now, at 8 pm, it's still 98. And we haven't had rain in forever and a day, and none in sight in the 10 day forecast.

So, instead of too wet/cold, I have too hot and dry. So yor're not alone in your garden woes! We've got 'em too, only in reverse.

The cold is no longer a problem here either lol!

No ground hogs are larger.....but a rodent is a rodent. I'm just not sure if Gopher and Prairie Dog are one in the same or not? Back home in the Northern Great Plains I've only seen Prairie Dogs in "Prairie Dog Towns" and there are usually hundreds to a colony.
Maybe these guys are just getting started ? :O!

Northerner, I'll have to remember to get some Flax seed from the new plantings. If you want any sooner, I could send some older seed from which I got this years spring seedlings from. Germination was good :) Are your plants just not getting as big or?
Karen, here's hoping you get some relief soon!

BTW So far so good with the Deer Out repellent!!
Yesterday was a nice overcast day with morning showers and perfect for planting more seedlings out, finishing up one of the beds and working on the compost pile. I got Snapdragons, Nicotiana alata, Hyssopus officinalis, more Calendula, more Malva, Mustard 'Tatsoi', more Coreopsis and Dianthus 'Siberian Blue' planted.

Still have more to plant, but gonna have to start getting up and out much earlier to beat the heat.....ugh!
