I hope my yard guy didn't kill my Banana Plant Ack!

Hello gang.

I'm not much of a garden person, but I could really use help on this one. I have a banana plant I've had for quite some time now, in fact thats why its so important to me: I planted it when I bought this house.

It's been doing quite well, but this winter it got really cold a few times. I knew (or thought at least) you should leave the old and the new would grow up inside the old plant. This started to happen, but while I was gone my yard person cut it off even to the ground! Now the stump is there, I could see the green from where it was cut but now nothing.

Is there anything I can try to save this plant? I can't really tell you alot about it because I don't know what kind of banana plant it was. To be honest I bought it just for fun off ebay a long while back and I just managed to keep it alive. It's kinda like a puppy now I'm attached! Lol.

Thank you all for any info you can give me that might help. I do have a picture of it when it was thriving if it helps determine the type (which I am curious about).

The pic is as: http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l227/hortone/Around%20the%20House/ban-plant1.jpg

Thanks again!
