Can't tell you about seed collecting but I do know they will keep on blooming if you cut the flowers. I press them and use them on cards and my pot last year bloomed all summer and into the fall.
They press very well and keep their color so nicely.

I didn't WS any of these but have the seeds and was going to direct sow them in the Fall in the flowerbeds. Somebody said if I do that, I will get blooms next Spring. Maybe I should do like you, do both! They are so pretty and I understand they reseed?Yippee! I do better WS in jugs but will try the direct sow. What do I have to loose but a pkt. of seeds and my pride?

Seeds start to form from the top down. You can either collect seeds or allow them to drop naturally and self sow for next year. I had good results with Vera's method. Direct sow in fall, they'll winter over as seedlings and bloom next spring.

Karen, do you know which variety of larkspurs you have? They are so pretty. So what month do you suggest I direct sow them, surely they will come up and then die back with frost gets them, right?

I am in Mid-Atlantic zone 7 and I plant larkspur in Oct or Nov. It comes up, but does not freeze over winter. It grows a bit whenever it warms up through the winter and early spring.

Self-seeded larkspur in my yard are probably "planted" earlier, just from falling out of the seed pods.

The standard cheap seeds are Imperial or something and do very well. Predominantly blue. I bought "7 Dwarfs" from Value Seeds a few years ago, and they seem to come up true from seed despite the presence of the regular Larkspur. They are more predominantly coral pink, with some lavenders and a really deep blue. I don't find them dwarf at all. All the types grow to 4-5 feet in this climate.

They have never transplanted well for me, whether winter sown or moved from their volunteer spots in the garden. Even with large chunks of soil, they tend to form just one spindly stalk after being transplanted.

With regular deadheading, they bloom into July. Even in the 90+ stretch this year, mine are still blooming. Nice to have that spike-y blue to complement the day lilies.

Thanks... I don't remember what kind of seeds I had. But most by far were self-sown through summer as they dropped from the plant. I'd direct sow around Septenber.

Pippi, larkspur are hardy annuals, they won't be killed by frost. At worst they might wilt a little but will shoot up fast with the first sign of spring warmth.

laagarden, here's a shot of seedpods forming on my delphiniums. Once one branch really starts setting seeds, I'll cut those off and let some of the lower branches flower, once they're done, I'll cut back again and usually get a light flush of flowers, but nothing like the first blooms
