WS Broccoli 'Goliath' starting to head!!!

FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY!!!

I would post a pic but they are too small to even try to zoom in on yet! Now I pray they don't try to bolt before they can mature!

It's really funny that about a month ago I had one smaller of the 5 plants start to bolt on me....he musta been a bad egg LOL!

Jim - I'll bet those large broccoli were grown over near the Salton Sea - or the San Joaquin Valley perhaps. That is one of my favorite places to be in the winter time - the Sea-I mean. It is a great place for bird watchers - white pelicans, snow geese, etc., that winter there. The "Sea" also has a very interesting history as well - how it came to be, and what it's future will become. As long as it is used for agriculture run-off, I doubt if it will have prospects as a recreational or real estate venture. My cole crops were great this year - but come to think of it, we had some pretty cold weather here for about a month or two - as they say "unseasonable" for Ca. Whatever it was my cole crops were exceptional this year. (I was trying to take most of the credit tho - heh, heh). Bejay

Calabrese has relatively small central heads as broccoli goes, but is noted for copius side shoots. It is just one step removed from the older sprouting broccolis. At this stage, there is nothing to be done. In the future, amending the soil, to improve fertility, may give you larger heads and florets on your next crop, but don't expect supermarket type heads from Calabrese. If you want an OP broccoli that comes fairly close,try Green Goliath

Hi there, I grew some broccoli over the mild winter and can't quite remember how long it took for head formation. But I think about a couple of weeks at least, though it might have been because the weather was cold. Surprisingly, I found that the heads can stay on the plant quite long. I didn't stagger my planting so I ended up with a lot of broccoli ready at the same time which I couldn't eat at once. All that happened was that the flower heads got larger, looser and started to look more like buds, but they still tasted very good. Once again though, that might have been because it was still pretty cool. If the temps start rising, your plant might bolt faster. I didn't fertilize nor do any special watering. Hope that helps!

Many times the heads start light green, but it not a phnomenon I have observed in Packman. If they are just starting the light green is not unusual, but it become blue green before the buds fill out.

LOL!! Now here's hoping our weather will hold up and not get too hot. Supposedly the 'Green Goliath' is supposed to show better heat tolerance but I'll be convinced when I get a harvestable head...hmmm?

I didn't get to eat any of my broccoli! My plants are nice and healthy, but there's not much of a head and they started to "flower" right away. :(

Very exciting! Broccoli is one of my all time favorite veggies. Mine came up but didn't make it, but perhaps it's just as well, as there's not much room in my garden.

Let us know how it tastes once you harvest them.

Once they start heading, about how long does it usually take? I can't wait! Does anyone know how to freeze the florets?
