What type of bamboo do I have?

A friend of mine a few years ago gave me what he called "Chinese Bamboo." I live in NC and this bamboo dies back to the ground every winter and grows extremely quick in the spring/summer. It does not spread like regular bamboo around here , it stays in a clump and the clump gets a little wider and taller each year. Int he late summer it has red to rust colored tassel blooms that the bees love. The leaves are wide and almost spade shaped. Does anyone know what type of bamboo this is?

It's definitely not bamboo, based on your description. It's some kind of large reed grass, like Arundo donax. If you can post some pictures, we can maybe give you a better i.d. Also, take a look at the link below and see what you think.

I'll bet it's Japanese knotweed - for some reason it's often confused with bamboo, probably because of the jointed stems. Get rid if it as soon as you can - it's an invasive pest. Check out the link below.

I can't really tell from the pictures, but the ones that are excluded are improbable. You can use it with seeds if you don't want the seeds to grow. It should also not be used on any new grass until the grass has been mowed at least three times.

Looks like olive although not entirely certain. Not a ficus since it has opposite leaves. Your plant plant has opposite leaves and the shape of the leaves suggests it could be olive. Olives are quite popular as bonsai subject although I have not see them being sold in big box stores. Garden centers and local greenhouses sometimes carry them.
