This is one of the earliest to bloom. On a 30 inch scape, 5 blossoms. The scape being long requires a stake to hold up. For cut flower a tall vase or cut the scape off halfway.

Pat, that is just stunning!! And 5 blossoms, what more could anyone want?!?! Can you tell us just what the cross is and is this the first time this seedling has bloomed for you? You really do come up with some beauties..congratulations...Donna

I've had bad seeds float too. I'll just leave them where they are and keep my eye on them and if they progress to the point where they grow a leaf the I'll just plant with the others. I find that the ones with a root that sink, seem to be coming out of the seed sort of twisted. But other than that I expect that they will be fine. I really don't know why some sink like that. I'll keep a small amount of the Sumatra seeds but at this point since it's not a cross I actually wanted I just can't grow everything on, I've already run out of space! Jodi-- As you probably know, I've poured over the net and have read so much in books now about these plants and what I've come to know is that there is really no consistency whatsoever with these things! Some will grow like weeds in Florida or Hawaii while they'll also take over your house in Denver or Phoenix. Considering the huge turnout of local orchid growers here in Denver at a recent show I'm willing to give this a try. As for my conditions-- light is the biggest issue. And what a pain when I have a free light source warming things up like mad outside-- stupid sun staying out of my windows. The good thing is, we get loads of reflected light off the building next door. It is quite strong and getting stronger with Spring coming. And according to my little light gadget, things are looking up. I also have a humidifier that is supposedly doing its job-- it keeps things at 55% humidity-- very comfy. But I plan on providing a humidity tray for the plant, too. I got a phal schilll....something species (hehe, sorry I forget the name!). It should be here Friday. I too bought it off ebay. Andrew, check out royalcolors.com. I have shopped there for years and their quality is good. They ship to the US so hurry so you don't risk a freeze. Easytogrowbulbs.com in San Diego is another option. I think H. Papilio bulbs tend to be a bit smaller with a different shape, but they bulk up and put out offsets. Soon you'll have A pot full. I find them a little unpredictable for blooming, but they are lovely. K

Please don't keep us in suspense any longer, what is it??..

This is what I would hope to accomplish with a cross of Ruby Star x papilio, I keep on trying...Donna

I guess my guess would be Lima or Jungle Star?

Thanks y'all. I lost track of the pollen donor. Likely Aulicum or maybe Red Lion. This is the fourth year of blooming. The seeds were set in 08. From that batch I have several nice crosses. I have named a few of them, but don't know how to document the name other than posting a photo on here. Perhaps sending the data over to the IBS web page for inclusion in their gallery of hybrids/crosses.

Is there any chance (when you find the time), that you might post pictures of previous bloomings of this particular hybrid? It would be very interesting to see if the flowers improved as the bulb got larger...Thanks and always curious,...Donna

Good question Donna. You are correct b infering that later flowers often look different than previous years. I'll see what I've got. This is also very common in Plumeria.
