How fast do Fargesia murielae & rufa grow?

I'm new to bamboo and I'm curious as to how much growth they put on in a year. I understand some varieties are incredible growers but can't find any info about these two which I'd like to try this year.

They will be in part shade, sheltered, and I can water regularly.

The clump diameter slowly spreads out and when a culm shoots up in the spring, that's the tallest it'll ever be. Bigger plant you start with, the sooner you'll have a taller plant. Fargesia tends to look ratty in winter when young in the north, maybe even with age.

Our experience here in z5a Wisconsinn has been that unprotected F. murielae dies back to the ground and doesn't get very tall. However, I bend my plants over each autumn and cover with an old sheet. When uncovered in spring they bounce right back, remain fairly evergreen and grow taller (new clums) each year. My murielae is 8 years old and about 9' tall - the clump is about 2.5' in diameter. My Rufa was planted last summer so it has not survived a winter her in northeastern Wisconsin.

I have had F. murielae for a number of years now. The plant here where I live, died last year, but the one that I keep at our place in the country, is doing fine. It is not near as leafy as those pictured in northern areas, but it holds it's own. I still have F. nitida here, and other than the cows, and possibly some deer, eating back the leaves, it gets larger each year, but like the murielae, it is not ever real thick with leaves. It has started to put on new leaves this season. The C. foliosa that I had here also died from lack of care, but the one at the country is flourishing. It does much better than the Fargesias do. I thought that it had died last year during the long dry spell, but after dropping some leaves, it came back strong. The leaves are dark green and healthy looking. Good Luck With Yours Kt

I would just bring the pot into your garage if you can, or your house. As the temperature gets colder, you may see the culms start to die, and becuase the plant is in a pot, the entire root system may suffer. Just watch the weather. If you think it is too cold, trim it down, and haul it inside.

Thanks Kudzu. Yeah, that seems to be what I am getting, too, about the seeds. One would think more than one variety were out there, though. If not, I will just happily deal with my murialae! I agree on the sun lovers- never seen or heard of one, but then I don't know that much yet so I thought I'd ask. I am very much interested in collecting all of the fargesia (their like Pokemon! Gotta collect them all! -- sorry, I've heard or been forced to watch too many kids shows :) ) I don't have much to offer this year. I can do small sections of Fargesia rufa for small sections of Fargesia sp. Thanks in advance to anyone interested. If anyone else has any seed info it would still be much appreciated. The concern is for the water-proofing system on the roof. In layers from the surface: 2 feet of soil; Visqueen; 4" styrofoam; 4" bentonite clay; reinforced concrete. Roots can wreak havoc with the system if they penetrate into it. (ask me how I know! We developed a leak and the culprit was a very lengthy elm root growing in from beyond the edge of the roof) Thanks for the help!
