As was said, depends upon the kind you have. (Some are ornamental, only.) When I lived in Long Beach, CA, my bananas took on average 15 to 18 months to bear. The warmer the climate, the shorter the time. If it's really consistently warm, can be as little as 9 months.

I'm inclined to think it is a cavendish type, but at this stage it is pretty wide opne.

It is virtually impossible to ID a banana without flowers. Taking a guess, I'd say you have some kind of "musa ornata", or "musa velutina" since the plant looks very narrow & slim in all its parts. It could also be a "musa itinerans", but these are more rare in the nursery trade. It could also be musa basjoo, check to see if you can see some red on the midribs. Many banana-plants in the trade are litterarly a "jungle". Some places they are just labeled "musa", and other companies make up their own names such as "musa big jungle" wich is sold at IKEA here in Norway. (Really just a super dwarf cavendish.) Many times the people in the store don't have a clue. Your best shot is finding a reliable nursery where the staff are interested in- and know about tropicals. Erlend
