Hmm, I am assuming you had them planted early last year and they grew well (they were established...). While most of mine woke up very happy...I had a few that weren't coming up(a cool & crappy spring so far) so I decided to give them a boost and it worked. I made a mini hoophouse over them to heat up the ground. I used a scrap piece of fencing - 2 foot width x 48". Layed it on the ground - it had a slight bend to it creating the "hoop". Cover the area with clear plastic sheeting - stake down very well. A couple of weeks later I had literally a dozen pups under one of these. Did it again over another corm and it worked again. I ended up trading all these "extra" pups for 8 serbian fir trees...

Set it in the shade for a few days until it recovers- IMO it just has more leaves than the few roots can support. Dead heat of summer was perhaps not the best time to be doing this. And a faster draining media would be better- adding BB's to pudding still leaves you with a cup of pudding :)

It depends. If you leave the pups in, you will have a whole mat of basjoos. IMO, it can be a bit untidy and takes away from the production of the mother plant in terms of how fast it grows and if it fruits. I have 2 basjoos here in the ground and they are pupping like crazy. Thing is, I've been lazy in chopping them off the main plant and by not cutting them from the corm, but rather the stalk themselves, the pups come back at an insanse rate of speed and growth. About 2 weeks ago, I trimmed the pups off and now they are almost 2 feet tall. I myself prefer a neater area and do like to trim off the pups so that I can get more energy into the mother plant. Also, I will save one of the pups incase the basjoo doesn't survive the winter outside.
