YAY i got to harvest for my first time!!!!

i went out yesterday evening, and i was looking at my g.chives, and i saw all those black little seeds, it was soo cool!! so i got to harvest my first time!! from chives that were in my yard for ever!! a few of the stalks came off so i cut them up and am drying them out, i hope that i can just use the whole thing down to but not the yellow part. that was just too awesome!!! **big grinn** so it begins!! LOL and how in the heck do i begin with the sweet williams?? i don't know how to get the seeds from them?? any help please :')) Medo

Did your seeds come from little pods on top or from flowers? I have regular chives and noticed that I've got both happening and was wondering where they are and how to save them....of course, I could look it up! I was just feeling the need to chat today. congrats!! LC Grace

first they flowered, then they had in between the flowered spots that had dried out, was the black seeds, and boy do i know the need to chat!! my two kids are at vbs and its quiet, and i'm used to all the noise!! you'd think i'd enjoy the peace and quiet!! LOL HEE HEE i think ya just kinda get them all out of the flwered type thing and let them "dry out" for a few days or however long, i store all my seeds in a medicine bottles, (i have tons of them) and put them in the fridge. Thank you :'))

Tiffanyrose, Thank YOU! I had such a good laugh after reading your post. Because finally I realized what I've been missing out on. Like you, I'm a newbie and several of my plants have suffered. Not due to lack of love, but due to my ignorance/inexperience. Since my spruce started dying 2 weeks ago, I've been really discouraged. But hey, look, my lilacs are still (barely) alive, my grass is finally growing and my viburnums are still green. And my composting works! I really, really like your attitude. And congratulations on your lavender, pumpkin and sunflower!

ok let me clarify, i'm not so worried about the peppers that are on right now. i am worried that the fruit that are on right now wont let the plant mature enough to give me a nice size crop before it turns to cold in about 6-8 weeks from now. i know that pants grow better without fruit on the vine but I do not know if 6-8 weeks is enough time to grow and put on a second crop.

All that's left in terms of food are three rotting apples, maybe 1/2 the banana (in chunks, kind of everywhere, from when I 'fluffed' things up about a week ago), and that's really where all of the worms are congregating, and a handful of half decomposed edamame shells. I haven't added new food in probably a month. (Is it okay for them to be piled up on each other going in and out of the apples? I've tried to break them up a bit...the apples, not the worms.) I'm putting in fresh bedding (on the side that I've cleaned out), but no new food. (I promise! I learned my lesson!) The mucky mass that I'm removing is castings mixed with bedding, and is probably 6 inches thick. The bedding isn't all matted at the bottom, it's in matted clumps throughout the bin. I didn't want to add anything (i.e. more bedding) without getting the muck out, especially since all of the dead worms are at the bottom and in the corners of the bin, and I didn't want to risk any further die-off. For the record, my wormies have been dying, but they haven't been trying to escape. The ones that are alive seem happy and rambunctious. I will not overfeed again. I will not overfeed again. Here's a quick shot of the baby figs of my main crop. They are about the size of my thumb. We just moved to a new house little more than a year now, so all of my trees are still rather young, so that means they provide me a bundle of that first year harvest excitement/happiness :) video

My garlic chives hasn't bloomed yet. : ( I hope they still do.

I posted a photo of garlic chives seed heads below but couldn't find one of Sweet William. I haven't grown it but with other dianthus, the seeds will turn black when they're ready and the pods dry and maybe start to open a little on top. I'm sure someone will know.

My chives were just cut back a few days ago after blooming since end of May. Those seeds were still green on flowers just starting to fade...hmmmm. Normally they would take a few more weeks for seed to mature here.

I wintersowed Garlic Chives last winter but I don't think they bloom until mid Summer. Don't worry yet :)

Sweet William seeds are formed in little upright pods that are left behind after the petals fall away. They will turn brown.
